Same for boys please. This is the list we've decided on and just want an idea of how these are likely to be received and to help narrow down.

Harold
Herbert
Walter
Hector
Leonard
Howard
Maurice
Victor
Percy

Interesting list.

I love Victor and Howard. LOVE them. A little Howie would be nice but maybe too close to Harry?

Leonard (and Leopold) are fabulous too, with the 'mainstream' option of Leo if desired.

NOT keen on Percy, Harold or Walter though.

saffronwblue · 08/05/2011 12:25

I think they are all quite challenging and will remind people of grandparents or great uncles. Obviously you are Ok with that.
Leonard. Harold or Victor would be my pick.
They are all actually lovely solid names.

valiumbandwitch · 08/05/2011 12:27

ps, I quite like Hector too but it's already become significantly more mainstream than the rest of your choices iykwim. I know a couple in real life. And I see it mentioned on MN now.

MelinaM · 08/05/2011 12:27

Absolutely adore Walter and PercySmile

Herbert, Leonard and Maurice are lovely too!

I don't like Harold, Hector, Howard and Victor I'm afraid.

robincousins · 08/05/2011 12:50

Harold nice and he can always use harry

Herbert nn bertie nice but the saying he's a right herbert would dissuade me

Walter could grow on me nn walt nice but wally no

Hector quite like the name but it's meaning would put me off

Leonard nic eand could use leo

Howard no although howie is ok

Maurice again i can see why it could appeal how about laurence similar sound but nicer imo

Victor ok but quite harsh sounding

Percy i like this very sweet but i think i've heard on mn this can be a name for penis never heard it myself and doesn't stop people using william or toby for that matter

Maybeitsbecause · 08/05/2011 13:03

I really like Hector, and think Herbie and Howie are very cute (although Howard and Herbert are 'no' for me, so don't know how that would work).

The rest are quite awful. Maurice and Leonard are foul.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 08/05/2011 13:09

Harold, Herbert, Walter Hector adore those first four however I'm not sure I'd be brave enough for Walter and Herbert.

serendipity16 · 08/05/2011 13:19

I prefer your boys list over your girls list.

Harold - Not keen but makes me think of Harold in neighbours who i love.
Herbert - Don't like
Walter - Like this
Hector - Love it
Leonard - Not keen but probably cos i have a cousin called Leo who is a nasty young man.
Howard - Ok
Maurice - Not keen
Victor - Ok
Percy - no no no

My favourite is Hector then Walter as a runner up Smile

MercurySoccer · 08/05/2011 13:24

I like Walter, Maurice and Victor. Hector and Leonard are OK, prefer Leopold to Leonard though.

Not keen on Harold, Herbert (how about Albert instead?), Howard (Edward much nicer IMO) or Percy.

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 08/05/2011 17:15

Hector
Maurice
Leonard

suspiria · 08/05/2011 17:26

Hector and Victor are my favourites. Excellent names.

cece · 08/05/2011 17:35

Harold - Harry if OK but popular, not sure how Harold without shortening to Harry would be received
Herbert - er no!
Walter - OK ish
Hector - seems to be getting more popular
Leonard - I love this and love love love Lenny
Howard - OK
Maurice - not keen
Victor - like a lot
Percy - big no!

TheVisitor · 08/05/2011 17:36

None of them!

squeak2392 · 08/05/2011 18:37

Harold - Nice.
Herbert - Okay.
Walter - Nice.
Hector - Love!
Leonard - Like.
Howard - Like.
Maurice - Okay.
Victor - Okay. Maybe a bit old.
Percy - Love.

Hector, Leonard or Percy
Or Walter, Howard, Harold.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 08/05/2011 18:41

Victor and Hector tops
Walter next
Howard if it was Howie

My DH's dad was a Harold and was only ever a Harold, never a Harry.

evamummy · 08/05/2011 21:36

All nice except Hector which means Bully. I particularly like Harold, Victor, Leonard and Percy.

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 09/05/2011 12:45

Hector doesn't only mean bully, (the Verb to Hector, does yes), but I believe it also means 'steadfast' - I'm not sure why people get so hung up on the one meaning of the name.

iph · 09/05/2011 15:24

Not keen on any of those, sorry. Maybe Hector at a pinch?

Please not Walter, can't think of many positive connotations -

Wally
Where's Wally?
Walter the Softy from The Beano
Walter Mitty
Walt - Irish equivalent of a bit of a wally and also used for penis
