39 wks tomorrow - another boy's name shortlist to come and judge...

I've done this once before but we've changed the list a bit since then and we did find everyone's comments scary nervewracking helpful so we're going to do it again. Apologies if you've seen my earlier thread (but many of you will be pleased to hear we've lost both Wyatt and Ludovic Grin)

DH is Scottish, I am Irish/French and live in the South of England. We have always found boy's names really really hard and still have issues with every name on our list (which I'll mention below). We are struggling to agree as well, whatever DH decides is his favourite is my least favourite and so on... We've eliminated quite a lot of names that one of us just doesn't like and we're left with:

Euan - I have a "you and whose army" thing with it. Plus I don't love it but it's ok. Is DH's favourite
Fraser - Solid (and a family name) but possibly a bit dull?
Hamish - Too much? Also there are no good nns so we're worried he'd end up as "Hammy" or "Hamster" Shock
Rory or Ruairidh - part of the problem here is agreeing a spelling and pronunciation, Rory = Raw-ry and Ruairidh or another Gaelic spelling - there seem to be a few - is more like Roo-ree
Seamus - a longtime fave, DH has now decided you really have to be Irish (not just have Irish grandparents like me) to use it. Sigh.

Thanks for your comments Smile

Fraser is my fav, but I do have one Smile

fairimum · 07/05/2011 10:18

fraser - not at all dull!

jumpyjack · 07/05/2011 10:22

I love Hamish - and one I know is called Haymy for short. I wouldn't worry about nicknames, they develop naturally and unless you hate an obvious one, something you like will evolve possibly unrelated to his formal name.
After that I like Euan. Not fussed on any of the others

Kyrie · 07/05/2011 10:24

I like Euan or Ruairidh. Euan will be much more straight forward in spelling an pronounciation so 'easier' but really people will soon learn to say Ruairidh.

Seamus is really nice, maybe it is too Irish.... not sure. I have similar Irish connections to you, I'd use Sean, Ronan, Ciaron etc with no probs so don't know why I hesitate over Seamus but I do.

The only one I really don't like is Hamish - too many Hamster's are called this.

NorkilyChallenged · 07/05/2011 10:30

Thanks all! Will show DH comments too, helps as we don't tell people in real life and we're a bit sick of talking to each other about it!

Had to Grin at "too many hamsters are called Hamish"

Any more?

Jojay · 07/05/2011 10:31

I like Fraser best, followed by Rory.

Maybeitsbecause · 07/05/2011 10:32

Ruairidh / Ruairi or Seamus are both lovely.

I dislike the Rory spelling, sorry.

Hamish is a bit 'comedy Scottish'.

Fraser and Euan are awful.

MollysChamber · 07/05/2011 10:34

I like all of them.. So not much help really Grin

Newgolddream · 07/05/2011 10:52

Fraser is lovely, not boring at all. I think loads of people pick really stupid bizarre names that may suit a wee baby without thinking about a 40 year old with that name wandering around.

Im Scottish and DS1 (whos 18) is called Connor, I think the Irish spelling is just Conor though.

wigglesrock · 07/05/2011 10:56

Euan is my favourite, if you like it but don't love it what about Eoin (Owen). Not a Seamus fan, sorry bit old man for me (and I'm Irish Grin)

loler · 07/05/2011 11:02

I've got a Euan (when we called him that I also didn't love it but I do now!) - have to spell it every where but at least it's short to spell!

If you're living in England I think he would thank you for spelling Rory the easy way. Also if you're living in England he'll be Raw-ree to anyone who doesn't know him well. Lovely name though.

Fraser - would be a grower sort of name I think - can't get 'house of' out of my head, so a bit middle class old ladyish!

Love Hamish but dh said we had to be living in Scotland to have this name, we weren't so didn't. But I love it! Don't worry about the nn - he'll probably end up with a nn that's nothing to do with his name anyway.

Love seamus too but not sure I would want to be called seamus living in SE england?

Doesn't help much does it - I like all your list

Yama · 07/05/2011 11:05

Barring Fraser I love all of your names.

Favourite is Euan.

ChippingIn · 07/05/2011 11:19

Hi again!!

I hope you've eaten enough chocolate for this!!

I see you still haven't changed your name to NorkilyChallengedNotSoMuchNow Grin but thank god you came to your senses about Wyatt & Ludovic!!

What accent do you have? I think if you have even a trace of an Irish accent you could get away with Seamus or if it's a family name (you don't have to say how many generations ago!!) but other than that, it would see a little bit 'try hard' to some I guess. As I said last time, I know an old Seamus who is lovely, however, I find it hard to picture a little boy called Seamus Confused...

Euan - nope - hate the 'you and who' (just not keen on the name either) [Sorry Mr NC]

Fraser - possibly a bit dull? yes - dull & the smelly boy at my school when I was about 9!

Hamish - ... I just want to say 'MacBeth' Hayms or Haym - not keen.

Rory or Ruairidh - part of the problem here is agreeing a spelling and pronunciation, Rory = Raw-ry and Ruairidh or another Gaelic spelling - there seem to be a few - is more like Roo-ree - I like it when said/spelt traditionally but I still think of the car!!

So, out of your list I'd go for Seamus I guess - but frankly I'd keep looking Grin

argylesocks · 07/05/2011 11:22

Euan or Rory/ Ruairidh. I also like the Conor and Eoin (Owen) suggestions. I work with an Eoin and I think it's awesome.

The others sound really 'old man' to me and not really in a good way. I know it's just personal but I think Fraser and Hamish are awful.

ShowOfHands · 07/05/2011 11:22

Ludovic's a bloody brilliant name. I know a beautiful Ludovic (Ludo).

I like Ruairidh or Hamish. Hamish in particular.

lovecorrie · 07/05/2011 11:24

Magnus? I love that name - scottish roots too hasn't it?

goodegg · 07/05/2011 11:30

I like Fraser, then Euan.

Please not Hamish, unless you move to the Highlands!

messagetoyourudy · 07/05/2011 11:31

Fraser is the best name on your list and then Hamish.

What about Hector? or Fergus?

cazzybabs · 07/05/2011 11:43

i like Ruairidh and hamish

LouMacca · 07/05/2011 12:14

Out of your choices, Fraser by a country mile......

ChippingIn · 07/05/2011 12:18

Well - that's conclusive Grin

They'll probably end up calling him Bob.

MercurySoccer · 07/05/2011 12:27

Euan - OK, and I hadn't thought of "you and whose army". Or how about Owen or Evan as alternatives?
Fraser - don't like, sorry
Hamish - Great name, and I'd think Hay would be likely nickname.
Rory or Ruairidh - like with Rory spelling (particularly if you're living in England)
Seamus - quite like, or you could use the English version James?

Other ideas...

Alistair
Maxwell
Elliot
Oliver
Dylan
Alexander
Samuel
Niall
Gabriel
Nathaniel
Ethan
Aaron

NorkilyChallenged · 07/05/2011 12:28
Grin

Yes, it's not conclusive but it's still confusing interesting to see reactions.

DH is driving me mad now so we're going to have a break from talking about it (he keeps moving the goalposts as far as I'm concerned. Plus I'm 39 weeks pregnant and not very rational possibly...)

ChippingIn · 07/05/2011 12:48

Wait until the baby is here, see what suits him or her if they're wrong!

It's good to have 'short list'... a divorce is less usefull Grin

NorkilyChallenged · 07/05/2011 12:49

Grin ChippingIn

We have a girl's name just in case.

Never really wanted that "see what suits the baby" thing. Partly as I definitely don't think my judgement can be trusted right after childbirth (bit loopy) and partly because dd2 looked like she'd gone 5 rounds with Mike Tyson when she was born so I dread to think what we might have thought "suited her" then... Wink
