Teddy, Jack, Samson?

Still struggling with a final choice! DP likes all three.

I really like Teddy and it goes well with our surname Brooks.... but the dweeby kid on the BBC sitcom The Rileys is called Ted, and for some bizarre reason, it put me off! Not massively keen on Edward - again the association with Prince Edward, Ed Milliband, Eddie Izzard puts me off which is a shame as its a classic name. DP won't consider Teddy as a nn for Theodore at all.

Jack has been my favourite for years...........but how common is it really!?

Samson was a name I spotted in Cornwall recently where my mum lives. But we worry Samson might be too much to live up to. Saying that, DP is over 6ft and I'm 5ft 6 so not that risky. Samuel just doesn't cut it for me. I think its the "mule" sound. Crikey I'm riddled with hormones!

Samson is my fave, love it

rachel1970 · 05/05/2011 21:06

Definately Samson - lovely, classic and not as overused as the other two.

SamsGoldilocks · 05/05/2011 21:09

I love Teddy - i think it's a great name , but Samson is brilliant - much better than Samuel

MercurySoccer · 05/05/2011 21:10

Samson is great, a classic underused Biblical name.

Jack is OK but extremely popular.

Not keen on Teddy, can't get past it being a toy's name.

Firawla · 05/05/2011 21:20

I like Samson, more unique than the others and it is really nice. Also find Teddy quite cute, not as keen on Jack it's an okay name but too common now it makes it seem a bit boring. Samson is great though

MelinaM · 05/05/2011 21:24

Love TeddySmile Samson is lovely too, but Jack is quite a 'canine' name I feel!

pilates · 06/05/2011 12:19

Jack - good strong name, popular for a reason.

tammytoby · 06/05/2011 13:21

Definately Samson - lovely name.

Jack is so overused and dull in comparison. Teddy is 'cute' for a stuffed bear or other cuddly animal (or baby/toddler) but to me it doesn't sound right for a grown man.

Cattleprod · 06/05/2011 17:28

Teddy can be short for other names apart from Edward and Theodore...

Edgar
Edwin etc.

Please don't use Jack. It's so common you might as well call him 'boy'. He'll end up being called Jack B or Brooksy, or worse, tall/big/fat/naughty/smelly Jack based on some (usually unflattering) feature just to distinguish him from the dozens of other Jacks around.

evamummy · 06/05/2011 21:59

Another vote for Samson. Lovely!

I agree that there are more than enough Jacks out there - too many imo. Teddy is sweet for a little boy but I'd prefer a full name like Edward or Theodore.

ColonelBrandonsBiggestGroupie · 06/05/2011 22:40

Teddy as a nn is lovely but I wouldn't go with it as a given name, personally.

Am not liking Samson at all and am v surprised at so many people saying that they love it.

tattycoram · 06/05/2011 22:44

We didn't call DS1 Jack as we thought it was too common and I haven't met a single one since he was born

drivingmisscrazy · 06/05/2011 22:48

I know a Samson - unusual name - lovely kid. Very much enjoys smiting philistines with his plastic sword (he's 3) :)

jellybeans · 08/05/2011 09:47

Jack is not so popular now but there will probably be one other in the class at least. It is a nice name though. Do you like Zack?
I like Ted but not Teddy. Also like Sam and not Samson.

AnnieDelores · 13/05/2011 14:42

Mmmmm, Samson is growing on me even more. I guess kids these days are less familier with biblical tales and if he's big and sporty like his dad it will suit him anyway. If he's slim but slightly gobby like me :-), then it will suit him in character too.

There is always the safety net of just "Sam" which is also lovely.

I just can't be 100% sure on any of them!

Our little boy is Samson. I took a bit of persuading and wasn't 100 per cent sure either, fearing a lifetime of Delilah jokes, and also worried that he might turn out to be too weedy for it - but he's currently only the 91st centile so perhaps he's growing into it! He can always use Sam if he hates it, and he has two traditional middle names too if he really wants to get away from it.

wheniwishuponastar · 19/05/2011 11:51

i think Samson is the best name out of the ones you are suggesting. Its unique without being too unusual. and sounds nice. has a nice nickname. its got everything!

AnnieDelores · 20/05/2011 21:58

Hi PeggyOlson. Forgive my ignorance but what do you mean by the 91st centile? And do you get a positive reaction to the name? We were thinking on Samson David Stanley Brooks to accommodate relatives! Although I worry that Stanley doesn't go with Samson!
