on many name threads people often say they dislike frilly girls names

what exactly do you think makes a girls name frilly , which names do you consider frilly

and which girls names are definitely not frilly but strong and why

I consider these to be 'frilly' Arabella, Annabella, Gabriella, Isabella ...etc... etc....

WanderingSheep · 04/05/2011 21:08

Aurelia and Aurora are quite frilly.

Flower names, Daisy, Poppy, Violet are frilly too.

MelinaM · 05/05/2011 17:04

I'm adding Lucy/Lucie, simply screams girlie!!!

minipie · 05/05/2011 17:21

Yup, frilly for me are those with -ella, -etta, -elle, -ana etc. So Arabella , Georgiana, Henrietta, etc.

I think Poppy, Daisy, Molly, Polly, Lily are not "frilly" but are "cutesy" which is a bit different - less Minor Royal, more Disney Character if you see what I mean.

MelinaM · 05/05/2011 17:23

I do! When will these 'cutesy' names fall out of favour, I'm so bored with them!!!

Oh and girls' names that are strong and not frilly tend IMO to be those ending in a consonant rather than a vowel or Y.

Hazel
Ruth
Tess
Harriet
Tamsin
Rachel
Helen

Although there are some that end in a vowel that I think are strong, eg Sara or Nina. They tend to be quite simple and start with a strong consonant.

We have Hattie and Felicity, best of both worlds!

Frilly names:

Annabella
Aurelia
Isabella
Arrabella
Felicity
Francesca
Cherrida
Clementine
Christabel
Octavia
Calypso

I think it is long names, at least three syallables, that are very girly, and often end in an a.

Non-frilly names:

Clare
Sarah
Heather
Elaine
Ann
Rachel
Mary

Strong sounding, and no more than two syllables.
