Help - girl's name needed and baby overdue

Lostforaname · 03/05/2011 17:54

The bump is of unknown gender. We have a boy's name but can't decided on a girl. Between us, we've come up with this list - some I prefer, some the other half. What if anything jumps out? Are there other names that we haven't thought of along these lines?

Girls
Anna
Clemency
Cordelia
Dulcie
Edith
Eleanor
Francesca
Harriet
Isobel
Kate
Laurie
Maria
Meredith
Nancy
Rowan
Ruth
Sophia
Thea

They are all really nice except Edith, Maria, Nancy and Rowan.

Harriet and Sophia my favourites.

Lostforaname · 03/05/2011 18:31

Thanks. Looking at them with slightly fresh eyes, I think we've discounted Eleanor, Maria, Kate (damn that wedding) and Isobel (two friends with them in the last few weeks).

Edith would be Edie. I also quite like Helena, but pronounced Helen-a, rather than Hel-a-na and I'm not sure I can be arsed to go for a name that has two common pronunciations.

I love Thea and I'm working on DH a bit I think, but feel it should be lengthier. I wanted Alethea, but he says no, but is prepared to contemplate Dorothea, which could be quite nice. Anthea is a pretty name in itself but has Turner connotations of course.

Cordelia is lovely, as are Anna, Clemency and Ruth. Alethea is fab too!

loobylu3 · 03/05/2011 19:40

My favourites:
Anna
Cordelia
Eleanor
Francesca
Isobel
Kate
Nancy
Thea

ellangirl · 03/05/2011 19:57

I love Cordelia- did you ever read anne of greengables? What's your boys name, just out of sheer nosiness?

kangers · 03/05/2011 20:05

Love Dulcie.
What about bridgit?
Francesca would be Frankie
Clemency is a verb not a name ????

kangers · 03/05/2011 20:06

Wouldn't cordelia become delia- of cookery fame?
Or Cord? (Not very nice)

NeverKissPigs · 03/05/2011 20:12

I like Cordelia, Edith, Meredith and Nancy. Like's a bit lukewarm actually, I like them A LOT.

The only Cordelia I've every come across was Cordy and she was just stunning. And the Meredith I know is Merry.

Lostforaname · 03/05/2011 20:18

Clemency is a noun, not a verb! But it's also a name, promise.

Yes, I've read AOGG, but DH liked it on a girl we met.

Bridgit is pretty.

I'm quite pleased (very) by the positive reactions on here to the set. Although it makes choosing still hard!

The boy's name is David, for a family member, and because all the Davids we've ever met have been lovely men.

AKissIsNotAContract · 03/05/2011 20:23

Dorothea is lovely.

shmoz · 03/05/2011 20:26

Love Nancy, Cordelia and Thea

What about Cressida or Carenza

Lostforaname · 03/05/2011 20:29

Cressida has been vetoed already, and I don't think DH would go for Carenza. I do like Caroline myself, with Carrie for short, but he muttered things about Stephen King.

OP posts:
kangers · 03/05/2011 20:32

Everyone would make my stupid mistake and ask my stupid question about Clemency.
Love David. I am David. Great Book.

NeverKissPigs · 04/05/2011 09:59

With all due love, respect and admiration kangers, I think you're the only one on the thread thus far that has made that mistake Grin, which suggests that a small minority might be unfamiliar with it, but I think most know it's a name (and a noun).

I know three Clems, two female, one male (all much much older). One is Clemency, one Clementine and one Clement.

oohlaalaa · 04/05/2011 12:10

Anna - prefer Hannah
Clemency - quite like
Cordelia - too try hard
Dulcie - too sweet
Edith - dislike
Eleanor - like
Francesca - too frilly
Harriet - like, Hattie is a nice nn.
Isobel - lovely
Kate - lovely, as is Katherine for a longer name.
Laurie - i thought this was a shortening of boys name Laurence
Maria - lovely
Meredith - lovely
Nancy - nice
Rowan - again i thought this was a boys name
Ruth - like
Sophia - like
Thea - not keen

MercurySoccer · 04/05/2011 12:45

I like Anna, Ruth, Eleanor, Isobel and Sophia best from your list.

Anna - like
Clemency - like, also like Clementine
Cordelia - agree with oohlaalaa - too try hard
Dulcie - not keen
Edith - like
Eleanor - like
Francesca - OK but prefer Frances
Harriet - like
Isobel - lovely
Kate - don't like
Laurie - nickname for a boy's name
Maria - like
Meredith - like
Nancy - too frilly/prim
Rowan - too unisex, but I like Rowena
Ruth - like
Sophia - like
Thea - don't like

CandiceMariePratt · 04/05/2011 12:47

Dulcie is my favourite

DownyEmerald · 04/05/2011 13:36

If you're bothered about people misspelling it don't go for Laurie. My dd is called something along those lines so is often called/spelt Lawrie, Larry, Lorry. I would call her Lawrence (not only a boys name - see the Antonia Forest books), tell people she is called Lawrence but have Laurie as the nn.

Nancy is great.
I had a good schoolfriend Helen-a so really like that.
Isobel I like but majorly popular round here.

Emelene · 04/05/2011 17:27

My favourites off your list are Anna, Eleanor, Nancy and Thea. :)

mathanxiety · 04/05/2011 17:35

Anna -- lovely, classic
Clemency -- makes me think of the death sentence and applications for clemency
Cordelia -- lovely
Dulcie -- too 1915
Edith -- chic
Eleanor -- lovely but there are lots and lots of Ellies
Francesca -- too frilly
Harriet -- nice
Isobel -- lots and lots of Isobels, Isabelles, Isabellas, Izzies and Bellas around. LOTS.
Kate -- too topical?
Laurie -- makes me think of thousands of American women aged 45 and up
Maria -- ok
Meredith -- sounds larsh to my ears
Nancy -- very nice
Rowan -- lovely
Ruth -- gorgeous
Sophia -- lovely (but popular)
Thea -- a bit wishy washy

The one that stands out for me is Ruth, with Anna, Cordelia, Edith, and Rowan close behind.

Lostforaname · 04/05/2011 18:11

Thanks for the opinions. Laurie would be Laurence/Lawrence shortened (wish I liked Nicola as she is clearly the better Marlow twin). Food for thought definitely.

My favourites are:

Nancy (I have one)
Clemency
Cordelia

DownyEmerald · 04/05/2011 21:10

Oh well, which is the better twin is a whole other thread. In fact I think it has been whole other threads.....

UndiscoveredApprentice · 04/05/2011 21:14

Sneakily like Meredith with Merry as a NN, sounds so cute.

Love Laurie as well.
