What my baby won't be called

LaToada · 27/04/2011 07:24

i am famously bad at coming up with baby names. For some reason I err towards the faintly ridiculous and I know this but I just don't like any others
DC2 is due in august. So far this is what I've come up with together with the reasons I can't really use them in real life:
Frieda - everyone laughs and says it's far too old ladyish
Aydah / idah - as above
Jemima - bit dull and posh
Thera - not even sure how to say this
Aurelia - dc1 was going to be this but was a boy. Feel a bit weird 'reusing' a name
Delphine - love but a bit odd and what for short? Don't like Della
Giselle - as above and DP doesn't like because he thinks it's like jizz although I says more of a jez sound at the start
Alethea - think I like. Is it said alle thea?
Dulcie - worried about the 'dull' sound
Celestine - again a forerunner for Ds
Amara - like this but can't remember where I heard it and what it means

And to the boys....anyone still with me here?

Agustine / Augustus - I was so excited to be having an august baby. I love names with an obvious meaning and just as I was dusting my hands and congratulating myself on having found a boys name so early DP said no Sad. Reservations are as follows; Augustus - gloop. Augustine - I want to pronounce it august ine. Apparently it's auGustin. Which I don't like, too much like Justin. Also Gus for short has started reminding me of pus. Ewwww
Otto - DS was v nearly Otto. I really like it but it is very German. We are not German.
Leo - like. Fits in with august baby but a bit boring and DP doesn't like
Leander - bit girly. Wouldn't want a lee for short leonidas - I like but a bit poncy
Rastus - my addled with hormones offering
Emile - bit foreign for bog standard non exotic types like us
Idris - see Rastus

So as you see I have lots of ideas but no realistic ones
I had simlar outlandish ideas for DS1 but by the time I'd got him out after a two day labour I didn't care what he was called and DP wentvtor Tobias, which mow I love and is totally him dispite me dismissing it as v boring and brown in sound

Help me

Alethea (Al-EE-thea) is Greek for "truth" and I think it's a wonderful name. I also like Jemima and Delphine. How about Zephyrine?

tammytoby · 27/04/2011 11:29

Love Aurelia and Emil

Augustine is the female version of Augustin Smile.

MayBankHoliday · 27/04/2011 11:33

Alethea is pretty but may be mistaken for Alicia with a lisp...

theagedparent · 27/04/2011 12:14

Delphine and Otto are best on your list but prefer Dulcie and Otis

PorcelinaOfTheVastOceans · 27/04/2011 13:20

i love leo! idah is lovely too, though i wouldn't count out aurelia just because that is what you would have called DS. DD would have been angus if she were a boy, and it will still be top of my boy's list next time! Grin

and remember, the DC makes the name, not the name makes the DC! i know a little girl called inken, which i thought was a well strange name at first (the mum is scandinavian) but she is the kindest little girl ever, and has made me love the name! DP is yet to be convinced though! Wink

whizzyrocket · 27/04/2011 15:56

PLEASE have an Idris! What a beautiful name! Isn't it our duty to keep some of these alive?!

I like Otto too, and don't think you need to be German. It does sound a bit like a name you'd give your dog though.

I like Ada, but have no idea what you've done to the spelling!

Meglet · 27/04/2011 16:00

Leo is lovely, although I know 3 so it might be getting popular.

Frieda is also good. It might sound odd for a baby, but they're only babies for 18 months or so. Both my dc's have 'adult' names they had to grow into. My great, great Auntie is a Freda, she's ace.

Other random names I like are Bruno, Hector, Constance and Prudence. I'll keep banging on about them until someone on MN uses them Wink.

CinnabarRed · 27/04/2011 16:07

How about Freya as a more modern alternative to Freida?

CinnabarRed · 27/04/2011 16:07

Sally? Due a revival, I think.

LaToada · 27/04/2011 16:08

Thanks everyone this is great!

Adah is hebrew, from the bible I believe though I can't get 'great aunt ada' out of my mind and o think i prefer ida/h Tis v old lady, but so is Frieda and normally I poo poo old lady - mabel, Edith etc

You're helping me feel more confident about some of them Smile not sure DP would agree that's a good thing

I have this idea that is is better or perhaps easier for a girl to have a slightly bizarre name than a boy

setara · 27/04/2011 17:14

LauraNorder yes she was lol, but it would have been Autumn anyway,

BibiBelle · 27/04/2011 17:57

I love Delphine and would use Finn as a nn Smile

WinterOfOurDiscountTents · 27/04/2011 18:07

Augustine is a boys name, just ask the Saint!

rachel234 · 27/04/2011 19:28

In all other languages

August, Augustin, Augustinus are MALE names

whereas

Augustine is the FEMALE version

Just like Justin/Justine or Clement/Clementine.

Psammead · 27/04/2011 19:41

Do you like Benedict?

Greenwing · 27/04/2011 19:47

Really love the girl's name Alethea.
Have done every since my teen years when I loved the song of that name by Robin Trower. Link below.

Greenwing · 27/04/2011 19:59

Also, if you like the sound of Leander how about Lysander or Xander, or Alexander nn Xander?

BTW I like Frieda. Name of Einstein's first wife!
I knew a girl once called Elfrieda, who was called 'Elfie' when she was small. Very pretty and not at all old ladyish.

LaToada · 27/04/2011 20:07

I suggested Lysander for DS (along with twenty other jilly cooper classics!).

DP said 'it's am aeroplane, not only that but it's a crap aeroplane' so um no

I fo line benedict but chants of bendy dick would ve a concern and ben is boring and the name of most of our male friends

Oh and I'm sure St Augustine was a man Smile

Frieda - I love this, I don't think it's too old lady at all.
Aydah / idah - I love Ada and Ida, and would advise you use the proper spellings. Took me a while to figure out what you meant.
Jemima - Lovely, and back in fashion now.
Thera - I wouldn't personally, but it's okay.
Aurelia - Lovely. I know what you mean about reusing a name. My parents knew from the beginning I was going to be a girl, so I've never been able to say 'If I were a boy I'd have been called _ ', and I think I'd be a lot more proud of my name if I could. A sibling sharing it would kind of ruin it for me, especially if they turned out to be a girl as well.
Delphine - I don't think it would particularly raise eyebrows. Nn could be Des, Fin, Del, Fi, Delphi.
Giselle - Agree with you, more of a jezz sound. Don't like. Makes me think French harlots.
Alethea - Can be pn Ah-leh-thea or Ah-lee-thea. Don't like, sounds like Alicia with a speech impediment. Much prefer Althea (Al-THEE-uh), or Alicia.
Dulcie - Yup, Dull Dulcie. Don't like regardless - looks unfinished and nny.
Celestine - Oo, like. Prefer Celeste, but this is a lovely variation.
Amara - Latin meaning 'everlasting'. Like.

Agustine / Augustus - Prefer Augustus. You could use just August. Sounds better as a middle name than first, but still nice.
Otto - None of these Isabel's are Spanish, but that didn't stop their parents. On my list too, but I'm also in love with a fictional character by this name, so that's my justification if anyone says anything.
Leo - I really like this, but it's really popular compared to your others. Leon (slightly chavvy), Leonard, Leonardo, Leonato, Leonidas, Leonine, Lionel, Napoleon (lol).
Leander - Yes, a bit girly. How about Lysander or Xander?
Leonidas - Could be alright in the right area.
Rastus - No, not very nice.
Emile - Agree, very foreign sounding.
Idris - Okay. Would be a bit concerned about using it without Welsh heritage though.

HopingForAZoo · 29/04/2011 05:19

Like Frieda. And augustus.

NotTheOneWhoIsntTheOtherOne · 29/04/2011 05:42

Austin is a variation of Augustine apparently.

howabout · 29/04/2011 05:58

Another vote for Frieda, but how about Freya instead if you want a bit more trendy. I also like Delphine (might put on my list) and would shorten to Delphi. What do you think about Felicity shortening to Felix?
My DH never suggests anything but has loads of sisters which cuts down the options as can't choose one over the others and he keeps vetoing my suggestions. I also like Dominique, shortening to Domino but that breaches the sister rule.

nooka · 29/04/2011 05:58

I'd have loved to have been able to use Idris as dh and I are big fans of Ivor the Engine (although we didn't really watch the series until after we had our children) however I do think it is very Welsh.

My dd has Frieda as her middle name (after my grandmother) I think it's lovely (like Elfrieda too). Old lady names are always popular so I don't think she would feel out of place.

I knew a Delphine and that's what she was called (although I knew her at work - her parents might have called her somethign else when she was little).

I also knew a rather posh Alethea, and she pronounced it Al-e-thea with the middle 'e' like egg and a strong 'th' like Theo. I don't think it sounds like Alicia with a lisp.

Otto for a boy is pretty cool and I don't think that you have to be German.

CheshireDing · 29/04/2011 07:09

I like Otto very much, cool and unusual.

I also really Leo, not as much as Otto though and Frieda from your list, was that not the name of one of the ladies in ABBA?

I say Frieda or Otto.

LaToada · 29/04/2011 09:41

Ooo hadn't seen these later comments

Funny that Idris is viewed as welsh. I got it from Moulay Idris which is Moroccan and having googled it seems both arabic and welsh [cconfused] Coincidentally l am a bit welsh, I grew up there

I'm really not keen on Freya but so happy to see positive comments about Frieda, I know it's a bad idea to tell people your ideas there will always be the 'oh no my cousins wires sister was married to a hermaphrodite called tgat' but my mother's face was a picture when I said I liked it
