We really undecided to start with, up to the point that our son decided for us... so our daughter is now called Anna (Vittoria Vera) while we like the name Anna, for some reason it does not come natural to call the baby with this name. Also one of my best friend had a dd a month after me and called he Anna as well.

We are now thinking of to find a nickname like for example AnnaVee or call he Vera instead. While we liked Vera as a name ( my dh's mother) we have been told that it is very old lady and not in a nice way... suggestions ?

anna is a lovely name. perhaps it is a name she might grow into? you can of course change her registered name to something else if you want to. but if you are just unsure, choose a nickname for now. if you really don't like the name Anna (it doesn't sound like this is the case tho), then think about changing it.

Vera is a pretty name and not much used. the English pronunciation doesn't do much for the name unfortunately. would you pronounce it 'vee-ra' or 'veh-ra'?

you can change it by deed poll, I did so with DD when she was 2.

I have to say, I much prefer Anna to vera. vera is old fashioned and not that nice IMO, but if you like it, go for it

i would pronounce it veh-ra, which i think is nicer.

Lulumama did you change the spelling of your dd name or the name in itself after 2 years and how did you call her for two years ?

OP - veh-ra is lovely. but everyone in the UK will call her vee-ra. as long as you don't mind that...

Anna is gorgeous.

I like Anna, pretty name :) Not too keen on Vera but she's your child.

I believe you can change the name on the bc until the child is a year old but, as a pp suggested, it doesn't seem that you dislike the name. Give it a bit more time and then see if it does start to come more naturally.

If Vera is already on her birth certificate you could just call her by her middle name without changing the documentation - for school and that kind of thing she can officially be Anna Vittoria Vera known as Vera.

Babies grow into their names though - for the first few months it didn't come naturally to me to call my son by his name, we called him The Baby Grin At 9 months he is more his name though.

Anna's a beautiful name, I'd leave it as it isSmile

You can't change the names on her original birth certificate, you'd have to use deed poll.

Think you can change the name on her birth certificate in the UK upto a year but not if the baby has been christened.

Do like Anna but isn't it a bit odd that your bf used the same name a month later.

I think Anna is a lovely classic name and much nicer than Vera, would leave it alone if I were you. Vera sounds old-fashioned and a bit 'common' to me (sorry but it does!).

I agree that in the UK most people will not use your chosen pronunciation either...

Lulumama · 26/04/2011 17:18

sorry , forgot to come back to this

we basically changed her name from the proper name to a diminuitive of that name and had been calling her by the diminutive since she was days old, so we changed the name not the spelling
