Not at all. It sounds a bit disney or something though..... , and I would expect it to be nn Esme which is popular (fairly popular) now.

valiumbandwitch · 23/04/2011 16:24

ps, interestingly in my geeky name nerd opinion, i think names ending in 'da' are starting to sound more attractive to us. I mean us collectively. The 'zeitgeist'! Zelda for short would be gorgeous.

kreecherlivesupstairs · 23/04/2011 16:26

It would always put me in mind of Notre Dame. Sorry.

ExitPursuedByALamb · 23/04/2011 16:26

I love Esmeralda and would have considered it for DD, but we had friends with an Esme so didn't. I always think of Quasimodo Grin

DramaInPyjamas · 23/04/2011 16:29

Reminds me of 'Dearest Esmeralda' by John Denver. Nice name.
Could be shortened to Esme to make it a bit more modern.

ShimmeryPixie · 23/04/2011 16:38

I think it is a wonderful name.

purepurple · 23/04/2011 16:43

I like it a lot and love Zelda as a shortened version.

SilkStalkings · 23/04/2011 18:31

Would you pronounce it -alda or -elda? If the latter she/you might get a bit fed up with people getting it (justifiably) wrong.

suspiria · 23/04/2011 21:00

Esmeralda is a lovely name. Zelda or Esme sound perfect as short versions.

ilovesprouts · 23/04/2011 21:02

like esme /zelda

mathanxiety · 23/04/2011 21:10

Lovely, and I love Esperanza too.

Emelene · 23/04/2011 22:25

I just think of Disney. :/ I'd go just for Esme, to be honest.

MelinaM · 23/04/2011 23:32

Esmerelda is lovelySmile Please don't go with Esme, it's terribly common popular at the moment, and will be for some time to come I feel! Zelda is a lovely nn, and few and far between too!

HopingForAZoo · 24/04/2011 02:11

I like Ezzy for a nn. :) or easy.

PenguinArmy · 24/04/2011 02:23

We have it as the full name (spelt with a E) with Esme for short.

Although DH has started calling her Eggy as that's how she seemed to trying to pronounce it a few weeks ago.

BigSooz · 24/04/2011 12:08

It's not the prettiest sounding name, really, sorry.

75sarah · 24/04/2011 20:32

Definitely Esme or Zelda.
She'd have a nightmare at school with Esmerelda (even though it is a lovely name)
How about Desdemona or some other Shakespearean name? Or Endora!? x

HopingForAZoo · 24/04/2011 21:45

Blush that second bit was supposed to be Essy. Sorry!

severalyearsdowntheline · 24/04/2011 22:23

I met someone called Esmerelda and just felt sorry for her. I seriously thought that she was joking when she said it was her name.

Bumperlicioso · 24/04/2011 22:37

I really like it :)

cece · 24/04/2011 22:41

I have known One Esmerelda and personally didn't have problem with it. She was Kossovan though so I just kind of thought it was to do with her culture. Smile

I have an Esme, so obviously think it is lovely.

Having said that though it has become increasingly popular. When I had mine I was asked if we had made it up Hmm by several people Shock. In recent years though it seems to have become quite popular, much to my DD's delight - she didn't like having an 'unusual' name initially. She likes that there are others in the local area now Smile

squeak2392 · 26/04/2011 08:44

Perfectly acceptable. I've seen it cropping up on quite a few lists.
Seraphina is even more unusual than Esmerelda, and I've heard of several. Actually, I've heard of more real life Seraphinas than I have Esmereldas.
