In your humble opinion, what names (both boys and girls) are the most classy in the top 100.

Here is the link to the latest National Statistics list.

Cassius isn't posh these days, it's v innercity since Cassius Clay became Mohamed Ali and got worldfamous. Posh folk don't name their kids after boxers/footballers/sportsmen.

I think there are definitely 'posh' names!

e.g. when I said I liked Rupert, about a hundred people said "oh no, its far too posh".

However I have to agree that most aristo families name their children simple names like Tom, Edward, etc

evamummy · 24/04/2011 15:03

But the more non-posh people name their children Rupert or Cassius the less these become perceived as posh names. I know a lovely Quentin for example whose family aren't posh at all, so hopefully these names will lose their associations, especially if 'aristo' families use other names like Tom or Edward anyway. It would be nice to get rid of all this ridiculous 'labelling' of names. It does seem a very British obsession imo. And we should encourage more name diversity not less imo.

Sebastian and Florence for me.

CheerfulYank · 25/04/2011 02:34

It's not just Britain; it's a bit like that in the US too. If someone yells out "Zayden! Braylee! Get over here now," you have an assumption as to the sort of person that will be doing the shouting. Which is not nice and rather judgey and I everyone should stop. Blush

The surname thing is starting to be "common" now, although it used to be quite posh/

Agree with Yank that the labelling of names is not particular to the Brits - I am on an international names forum (weird, I know) and it's absolutely universal.

zozzle · 25/04/2011 20:35

I personally wouldn't want to give my kids "classy" names - would prefer something a touch different with a fab meaning.

mopsyflopsy · 25/04/2011 20:46

In most European countries people are less concerned about 'class' and labelling of names. I still struggle with the concept to be honest.

MelinaM · 25/04/2011 22:20

^I wish the UK were like that mopsy, I find France so refreshing!

baskingseals · 25/04/2011 22:28

i think Octavia is quite posh. lovely name.

CheerfulYank · 25/04/2011 22:37

See and here Octavia has taken on a "down market" feel. But I agree, it's lovely!
