Sadia or Tara?

Our shortlist of names for DD (due May) has boiled down to these two. Would be grateful for your thoughts as really not sure which to choose and DH and I keep going round and round in ever-decreasing circles (he favours one, I prefer the other). Thanks mumsnetters!

Like both.

Think Tara is very underused, was at univ with one (a million years ago) and haven't known any more.

Sadie nice also, but more common.

Think Tara has slightly more gravitas as an adult, but lacks an obvious NN for early years. Sadie sort if is a NN, for Sarah. Don't know if that influences you at all.

I'd vote for Tara because Sadia makes me think of boilers. That may be just me though!

palerfire · 20/04/2011 14:43

Thanks - NB to jollster, we're thinking Sadia rather than Sadie (although would probably use Sadie as a nickname when she's small)

BC - know what you mean about the boilers, but then Tara makes me think variously of Palmer-Tompkinson and Cilla Black so you can't really win!

are you prn sadia as sadie-a (as in saydia)? i think that could be confusing if so because when i see sadia i would tend to think saadia as any i've come across have been said like that or sa'dia
tara is nice

meditrina · 20/04/2011 16:26

I think Sadie is a lovely name, and not often heard. I don't like Sadia, though.

virginiasmonalogue · 20/04/2011 16:40

Tara!!

BikeRunSki · 20/04/2011 16:42

Tara

Went to school with one, have never met another.

randomimposter · 20/04/2011 16:46

ooops missed that "a".

In that case Tara for sure.

Ephiny · 20/04/2011 16:49

Tara definitely, very nice elegant name. I don't like Sadia at all.

palerfire · 20/04/2011 17:14

Again thanks all for your contributions - definitely food for thought! Just to clarify Sadia would be pronounced "Sardia" rather than "Sadie-a".

QOD - loving the suggested nnames for Tara!

I think you'd get all kinds of random pronunciations for Sadia actually - Sadie-a, SARdia, Sah-DEEya, Sad-ya, Sah-dye-ah etc. I've never actually heard of this name and guessing a lot of people wouldn't have and so wouldn't have a clue how to pronounce.

palerfire · 20/04/2011 17:29

Very good point Ephiny. Tara would be much more straightforward from that POV.

really don't like ta-ra-ra
Much prefer Lara.

Sadia pronounced Sar-dia means the fortunate. Its quite an old fashioned arabic name.

QOD · 21/04/2011 09:30

LOL I know a Tara very well, when a baby, a crawling one, she was "Tug the Slug" snort

But Tigs Taz and Tigger with the odd Tara rara boomdeaye is the main

GrumpyOldHorsewoman · 21/04/2011 09:47

I have a Tara, so that gets my vote.

Whatevs · 21/04/2011 10:25

Different, but both very nice.

Sadie wins by a whisker for me.
