Hispanic baby girl names?

MarieFromStMoritz · 20/04/2011 07:56

I have just started a thread to ask opinions on my DH's favourite girl's name: Rose. So I thought I would start a thread with mine. The name is to go with quite a grand Anglo name (think: Palmer-Tomkinson type of name).

Here goes:

Idalia (my favourite - pronounced 'ee-DAR-lee-a')
Valentina
Rosa.

Also, if anybody has any suggestions for other Hispanic girls' names, I would be grateful to hear them.

Please be honest - thanks Smile

Love all your names and dh's. We have a Rose, I wanted Rosa but dh didn't like it so we compromised on Rose. I never would have picked it before dd was born (she was a week old before we named her!). But it is lovely, classic and beautiful. And surprisingly uncommon as a first name.

Valentina also lovely. Not hispanic but how about Andrina, I really wanted that name but dh vetoed. Or how about Carmen?

MarieFromStMoritz · 20/04/2011 08:22

Thanks Bumperlicioso. You don't like Idalia, then?

Belen

PS Like Rosa but not others

virginiasmonalogue · 20/04/2011 08:30

Idalia is gorgeous!! Never heard of that before!

I also love Valentina. I can't choose between the two tbh they are both so nice.

Not so ken on Rosa, as next to the others it looks very ordinary and not as exotic/interesting.

I went to school with Anglo Spanish sisters called Anna, Esther and erm, Gemma!

Bumperlicioso · 20/04/2011 08:30

I do, but from when she starts school she will sigh and roll her eyes every time a new teacher pronounces it Id-er-LI-a. And she will always have to spell it. But then I have a v common name which I always have to spell anyway because of the variations.

MarieFromStMoritz · 20/04/2011 08:38

Not too worried about that Bumperlicioso as we live in Dubai, so there are children with names from all over the world here.

Belen = too close to 'bellend' for my liking.

Rosa and Valentina are gorgeous though.

Whatevs · 20/04/2011 08:45

I knew a lovely Catalan girl called Thais (pr. Tye-iss). Bit too much potential 'eh?' factor if you're living in the UK, though.

otchayaniye · 20/04/2011 09:24

My daughter is a Carmen - we both have Spanish grandparents and Carmen was my husband's grandmother. And it's one of my favourite operas and one I used to enjoy going to with my now-dead father.

I seized on it particularly as I prefer trenchant, one or two syllable names not ending in 'a'. Plus it's not especially Spanish in a British context. Everyone has heard of it and can pronounce it.

I also love Soledad (Solitude) who was my great, great grandmother -- wife of famous Spanish composer Enrique Granados. But that name might encounter pronounciation issues.

I also like Mercedes.

Thanks for the suggestions. I still have my heart set on Idalia, but everybody who I have mentioned it to goes "huh?!?".

Valentina is lovely. I love Belen - used to go to school with one in Spain. I think you'd struggle with it in the UK but if you're staying in Dubai then it might work.

I think I still like Rose, though. Rose Idalia?

Actually, Idalia's growing on me. Idalia Rose?

MarieFromStMoritz · 20/04/2011 17:53

Idalia Rose

Perfect Grin !

I like Valentina, its very 'jet set' I think it will go with your surname! I love Rose too. British Rose or International Valentina? :)

lljkk · 20/04/2011 18:40

Esperanza, Socorro, Maricela, Catalina, Claudia, Lola.

My best teenage Mexican mates (born & raised) included Sonia, Cynthia, Elizabeth & Hilda, not a Hispanic origin name among them.

I know a teenage Rosa irl, but to be honest i don't like it. I wouldn't call my daughter Pink, either. English tongues just keep thinking it ought to be Rose.

MarieFromStMoritz · 20/04/2011 18:42

My DH likes Catalina. It is one of his favourite planes!

Idalia is pretty, I think people would get used to it after a few times hearing it, it's probably just they are not familar with it because it's not a common name. Don't think I have heard of it before myself but its not like the spelling or pronounciation seem to be too difficult once you know?
If that's the name you love I think you should go for it

ValiumBandwitch · 20/04/2011 19:01

you have ruined Belén for me! It means Bethlehem.

MarieFromStMoritz · 20/04/2011 19:02

How do you pronounce it, ValiumBandwitch? I have never heard of Belen before.
