Dh and I are TTC. To occupy my mind i've been looking at names, amongst other things. DH wont talk baby names properly until there's a baby on the way (sensible I know) but I wanted your opinions on a few names i've been looking at.

Some of the ones below I like but don't know if I could get away with.

Boys:
Seth
Freddie
Jasper
Frankie
Jonah/Jonas
Rory
Louis
Arlo
Rafferty

Middle names would probably be Thomas or Patrick.

Girls:
Sophia
Meredith
Maya
Lara
Alana
Aoife
Elodie
Saoirse
Arwen
Effie
Romilly

Middle names perhaps Elsie, Edie, Olive and Fern.

I don't know if I'll be diffeent when I am pregnant but none of the "popular" names my friends like jump out at me at all

Not fond of any of the boys' names tbh.

Love Meredith.

meditrina · 19/04/2011 20:42

From the boys, Frederick or Jasper; and the girls, Sophia, Lara or Elodie.

Fatimalovesbread · 19/04/2011 20:48

Colonel Thanks, I can't get myself excited over boys names at all. But I love love LOVE Meedith Grin

Love Seth, Rafferty and Rory for a boy! Lara and Romilly are lovely for a little ladySmile

smother · 19/04/2011 21:07

I like Louis and Alana best.

schmee · 19/04/2011 21:16

Not sure about Jonah because of the Bible story. Both love the other boys names.

Not sure about Saoirse, basically because I've no idea how it would sound and I don't think most people would. Arwen is a bit Lord of the Rings, but I like Anwen which is similar?

suspiria · 19/04/2011 21:27

Seth,Jasper,Jonas,Arlo,Rafferty,Meredith,Elodie and Romilly are my favourites

I like your list more then most on here.

Boys:
Seth-were you an OC fan? Is nice enough, if a bit too biblical for my liking.
Freddie-never copy Jade Goody! It's not even a proper name, uless you count Buffy's RL hubby.
Jasper- ok if it suits the temperament of the child
Frankie- girl's name, or maybe from Angela's Ashes?
Jonah- I like it but the child could get teased at school for sounding a bit girly
Jonas-too much like the pop group
Rory- a bit trendy atm, and a bit of a dog name
Louis-If you pronounce it lewis, there are millions of them and it will be constantly misspelled, if you pronounce it louie it sounds a bit like a toilet
Arlo-good
Rafferty- too Sadie/Jude

Thomas is much better than Patrick.

Girls:
Sophia- great
Meredith- even better
Maya- how to pronounce? I love My-a, not keen on May-a
Lara- do you knoe this is a nn for Larissa? Love both
Alana- lots of spelling variations, nice though
Aoife- too difficult to pronounce
Elodie- nice
Saoirse- see Aoife
Arwen- good strong girl's name
Effie- too nicknamey
Romilly- too much like Romany, prefer Romy

Middle names perhaps Elsie- v old fashioned, Edie- Wisteria Lane?, Olive Oil and Fern is the best of this bunch.

olympialimpet · 19/04/2011 21:36

Boys names I like are - Rafferty (although would have to be Raffy) and Arlo

Girls names - I LOVE Romilly, like Elodie and also Aoife which is so pretty but no-one will ever be able to spell it or pronounce it properly

Edmundo · 19/04/2011 21:40

Louis and Lara are by far the nicest.

Maud2011 · 19/04/2011 21:46

Some random reactions, very subjective Grin

Seth - like it but makes me think "Starkadder"
Freddie - Hmmm, bit wet though...
Jasper - Regency villain, dog nasty man who sacked me - don't go there!
Frankie - I prefer Frank or Francis but Frankie's rather nice for a little boy
Jonah/Jonas - not keen, makes me think whale
Rory - don't particularly like the sound and what if the poor little thing can't say his Rs?
Louis - lovely but rather precious - in this country anyway...
Arlo -what?
Rafferty - surname

Middle names would probably be Thomas or Patrick. - I think your son might prefer his middle name to some of the above, at least until he's in his mid/late teens or twenties.

Girls:
Sophia - love it, elegant and timeless
Meredith - also very elegant, lovely ring to it
Maya - naah... not IMHO such a nice sound, but does have association with my favourite chocolate Green & Black's Maya Gold :)
Lara - very pretty diminutive of another lovely name, Larissa, have you considered that?
Alana - not keen, sounds like such an arbitrary feminisation of Alan
Aoife - lovely, but a nuisance to keep spelling
Elodie - not keen, sounds like Melody (not keen on that either) with the M left off
Saoirse - pretty but again nuisance to keep explaining spelling/pronunciation
Arwen - OK but not that wonderful
Effie - just Effie? I don't think it's much of a name on its own... but then Euphemia might be a bit of a cross for a toddler to bear :)
Romilly - lovely!

How about Rhiannon and Myfanway if you like Welsh names?

helendigestives · 19/04/2011 22:37

Boys:
Seth - lovely (a favourite of mine)
Freddie - prefer as a full name, Frederick
Jasper - not keen, think 'carrot'
Frankie - again, full names: Francis
Jonah/Jonas - nooo, like the Jonas Brothers, that Disney tween band
Rory - lovely, beautiful name
Louis - I can't get over names that have "loo" in them; I realise how mature this makes me
Arlo - sounds like how someone from Harlow would say 'Harlow' (speaking as someone whose siblings were born in Harlow)
Rafferty - I heard a woman call out this name to her son, and I couldn't stop laughing. It just seems such a silly name. Sorry, parents of Raffertys.

Girls:
Sophia - lovely
Meredith - lovely
Maya - the 'May-a'/'My-a' problem as listed above, though you'd only have to tell people once
Lara - lovely
Alana - lovely
Aoife - beautiful
Elodie - growing very popular - I know three of them
Saoirse - she would have a lifetime of saying "That's Saoirse, spelled S-A-O-I-R-S-E." Every time someone wrote her name down. Ever. And then having to explain the pronunciation for anyone reading that written word. (I had a lisp until I was about ten, which meant my name was heard and written and spelled wrongly until I got some confidence and a louder speaking voice. It was hellish for a shy child having to spell and repeat my name over and over.)
Arwen - lovely
Effie - no.
Romilly - really nice

pilates · 21/04/2011 17:49

Freddie and Rory
and
Sophia

missmelo · 21/04/2011 18:53

I like Jasper and Rory, and Seth is nice. I like Arwen, Lara and Maya. I think you have picked lovely names, lucky baby

Fatimalovesbread · 21/04/2011 20:12

Thanks for all your comments, all things to think about.

I never thought of the jonas brother, more thought about Jonas Armstrong of Robin hood fame Grin

Just have to say I LOVE Saoirse!!!! And it is truly not a bother at all to explain to people! I usually just have to do so once. Plus, I carry a personalized diaper bag with her name stitched on it... Easy as ever to flip around and point to the letters (for a visual) as I quickly explain the Gaelic grammatical rules. Actually, people quite love it, and I often get the remark that they wished they had the guts to use a name like that!

Sequintastic · 22/04/2011 10:21

Boys:
Seth - OK
Freddie - Love
Jasper - sounds like a magician
Frankie - Not great
Jonah/Jonas - don't like
Rory - very nice
Louis - really like
Arlo - not sure
Rafferty - cute

I'd go for Freddie, Rory or Louis

Girls:
Sophia - beautiful, but very popular at the mo (and I prefer Sofia)
Meredith - personally don't like
Maya - don't like
Lara - OK, prefer Larissa
Alana - OK
Aoife - Gorgeous, but no one knows how to pronounce
Elodie - I personally LOVE this
Saoirse - see Aoife
Arwen - not sure
Effie - cute, but I'd have a longer name on BC for her to use when she is older
Romilly - not really

Favourites are Elodie, Effie and maybe Sofia

randomimposter · 22/04/2011 11:06

Rafferty goes well with either middle name. Would love to use Rafferty but doesn't work with DS name or surname. Please use it for me :)

If not Arlo is nice, not keen on any of the others tbh.

Love Lara and Romilly of your girls names. Edie sounds best as a MN IMO.
