I know I'm being ridiculous but ever since I read Death of a Salesman I have always loved the name 'Happy'.

I don't think my OH would ever, ever agree to this so it's pretty much a no-go, but I really love it.

Please tell me how ridiculous it is so I can move on to names a-new.

Btw, Happy goes really well with my surname.

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

I could think of worse names, I think its cute... Can't imagine your child would thank you for it when they are an adult though!

HazeltheMcWitch · 19/04/2011 16:53

Well, it IS a name that is used not infrequently in some parts of Africa. But for the UK - a bit silly IMHO. But it is a nice sentiment, so maybe thing of things that mean the same - eg Felicity or Allegra. APols, can only think of girls names for Happy.

sharbie · 19/04/2011 16:54

merry is better

wigglesrock · 19/04/2011 16:55

What Gilmore? [grins] I know its a bad joke and one you'll probably here a million times, that and lots of dwarf jokes.

Just use it as a nickname that has nothing to do with the babys actual name, my dads family does this a lot Hmm or do the decent thing and use it as a name for their first cuddly toy!!.

If you like the sentiment, go for Joy or something that translates as happy.

KittyChat · 19/04/2011 17:17

Thanks for your answers - thought I'd get slated.

Maybe I'll move to Africa, Hazel! Then Happy will be just another Sarah or John.

It's a truly terrible name that shouldn't be inflicted on a child.

I know of a Happy, has a sibling called Magic I believe. Smile

overmydeadbody · 19/04/2011 17:55

It would be aewful for the person though, every time they weren't happy. Imagine going to see a therapist because you suffer from depression and having the added bruden of being named Happy.

DesertOrchid · 19/04/2011 18:21

Isn't Happy Loman's full name Harold? Happy could be a cute nn for Harold or Henry but otherwise I'd say the hormones are getting to you!

CarefulWithThatAxeEugene · 19/04/2011 18:21

Felix means happy.

pilates · 19/04/2011 18:31

Sorry, its awful.

Trinaluce · 19/04/2011 18:46

If it was for a girl, just pray she doesn't marry Mr Finish....

meadowlarks · 19/04/2011 19:20

I know a guy called Merry, after the character in LOTR. That's sort of similar and a bit more acceptable?

zozzle · 19/04/2011 19:23

Cute but silly ... ok if African.

Grin at Happy Finish.

I agree that the virtue names are generally to be avoided.

Prudence will undoubtedly develop a gambling habit.
Verity will be a compulsive liar.
Chastity will be a crack whore (apologies for the appalling phrase, just using it for dramatic effect). Grin

Even Grace is a bit dodgy - my grandma was called Grace and she looked like a hod carrier. It's just too much to inflict on a child if they turn out to be the polar opposite of their name. As overmydeadbody says, imagine if s/he suffers from depression.

And that's leaving aside the Snow White connotations...

exoticfruits · 19/04/2011 19:42

Sounds like one of 7 dwarves-they are sure to pick up on that in the palyground! Why not Joy?

QuickLookBusy · 19/04/2011 19:52

I used to work in a school in London, there was a little girl called Happy. She was lovely.

ChateauRouge · 19/04/2011 20:22

or Felicity?

I do know a Happy, and a Lovely, and a Beauty- all girls of Bangladeshi origin that I went to school with.

QuickLookBusy · 19/04/2011 21:04

Yes Chateau the Happy I knew was of Bangladeshi origin. I also knew a Lovely and a Lucky but didn't mention it as I thougth after exoticfruits comment about the 7 dwarfs, people would think I was making it upGrin

MelinaM · 19/04/2011 21:07

No, no and no! ...sorry!

ChateauRouge · 19/04/2011 21:35

am a bit [erk] now... as we also had a Lucky...

where are you from again?

ChateauRouge · 19/04/2011 21:36

Ah, yes... school in Larndun... phew!

olympialimpet · 19/04/2011 21:37
