Judah

I love it and my husband has warmed to it but it has the obvious negative connotations because it sounds like Judas.
Is that just an initial reaction that is quickly bypassed?
We would call him Jude from the start and Judah would be his full Christian name when or if he ever wants to use it.
Thoughts?

It is a Hebrew name - in the old testament

I personally don't like it and prefer the anglicised Jude

TurtlesAreRetroRight · 18/04/2011 15:14

It'd be fine. Jude's popular right now. Climbed quite a lot and is now top 100. There will be enough little Judes around (male and female) for it not to stand out.

rubyslippers · 18/04/2011 15:14

Oh, if you are going to call him Jude from the start then call him Jude

SolarPanel · 18/04/2011 15:22

Judas is the Greek form of Judah, so they are related names. Jude is also used as a short form of Judas.

Bue · 18/04/2011 15:50

I absolutely adore it. It's one of my favourites. I was madly in love with a Judah in high school, who was a wonderful boy :)

If you want to call him Jude though, why not just call him Jude? It's a legitimate name in its own right.

Daisypants · 18/04/2011 16:19

Thanks for the input.
I think I have confused things.
His name would be Judah, the thought with calling him Jude isn't that we are going to declare his name is 'Jude' it just seems to be the natural shortening of his name so it is probable that is what he would be called.
I want his name to be Judah, not Jude.

It's quite a Rastafarian name - twelve tribes of Israel and all that. I like it, but do think of a six foot dread Grin

elizabethsiddal · 18/04/2011 16:26

I think it is lovely

kiwidreamer · 18/04/2011 18:37

If you are concerned about the various connotations what about Jonah?

CarefulWithThatAxeEugene · 18/04/2011 19:03

The connotations of Jonah are not exactly great though, are they?

The thing about Jude is that as a saint, people got him confused with Judas and as a result they only prayed to him as a last resort. Hence he became the patron saint of hopeless cases!

What would put me off more is Jude in Jude The Obscure, what a tragic tale of woe that is. Plus the fact that I suspect its popularity is down to Jude Law, and I dislike that sort of bandwagon.

Judah is different, I would go for it if you like it.

mrsdaz · 18/04/2011 19:36

i always think of Jude as a girls names as had 2 female friends growing up called Judith and Jude

Hatterbox · 18/04/2011 20:06

Judah is fine.

Judas would be controversial, but Judah isn't!

squeak2392 · 26/04/2011 23:46

It's fine. Judas was a traitor, but there's a Saint Jude isn't there? Either way, Judah makes me think of Judea more than anything.

[I love the name Judas!! :'( There were probably loads of them around in his day - why couldn't they be in the Bible doing something good to counteract him :(]
