Ned or Ted...??

Hi there...we have a baby arriving in 8 weeks, our third. We already have an Archie (5) and a Tom (3) and if this one is a boy would like it to be Ned which I have loved forever. However am now wondering about Ted...have always loved it and it is a family name for both mine and dh's families so think maybe it is better.

What do you think?? Would rather not have Tom and Ted sharing an initial but guess he could be Edward on the birth certificate. Surname begins with P and is 2 syllables.

Go for it - give me your best girls!

Ted. Definitely ted. I expect you're sick of being told this but in Scotland calling someone a 'ned' is the same as calling them a 'chav' or a lout. So for me the name has not good connotations but I know naming is a personal thing and that's just my perspective.

Edward on birth certificate with Ted for short.

Don't call a child Ned - it's like calling him Idiot.

Ted, well, not for me as I think of Teds as being stuffed toys or old men. but Edward with Ted as a private family nn while he's young would be ok.

Edward is a lovely name.

CarefulWithThatAxeEugene · 17/04/2011 15:56

Edward, of course. Maximum flexibility. Ted, Teddy, Ed, Eddie, Ned, Neddy .... he gets a choice.

LetThereBeRock · 17/04/2011 16:09

I don't like either,but Ted is a slight improvement on Ned,though I like Edward.

I'm Scottish, and calling your child Ned here would be the equivalent of naming him 'chav' or 'thug'. But even if that wasn't the case I think Ned is an awful name, and best reserved for carthorses.

Edward is a lovely name but we wouldn't use it because we hated all shortened forms-Ned and Ted being the worst. Give him the full name on BC.

Edward with Ed as a nn.

Sounds good with your other two children.

jezebelle · 17/04/2011 17:55

I love Ned, dh has vetoed it for this baby though as he says its a hill billy name !!

jellybeans · 17/04/2011 20:01

Ted

Northernrose · 17/04/2011 20:09

Edward nn Ted...not Ned...for same reasons as washngo and LetThereBeRock

COCKadoodledooo · 17/04/2011 20:26

I wouldn't have a Ted with a Tom. I do have a Ted and a Ned though Grin

Ned is dh's nn from uni days (and bears no relation whatsoever to his actual name!), ds is Edward. From pretty much day on he became Little Ted, though he's veering toward Eddie as a nn for himself now (I'd prefer not, but his name, his choice I guess).

MelinaM · 17/04/2011 20:31

Definitely Edward nn TedSmile

singersgirl · 17/04/2011 23:56

Know several Neds and Teds. For me Ted every time - but I might not with a Tom...

missmelo · 18/04/2011 00:43

Ted, its just cuter

WMDinthekitchen · 18/04/2011 01:14

Ned means lout (Scotland). Ted reminds me of Ted Heath, so no (am very old). Tim?
