AMELIE

We live in England and have zero heritage from a French background, could we get away with using this name? If it helps, I have studied french previously and was a grade A student, so I'm reasonably fluent in the language?! Wink

What are the nicknames that come straight to mind? Do you know many little Amelies?

Would be grateful for any opinions. TIA.

i love it too..nn milly maybe?

Quenelle · 15/04/2011 15:49

It's very pretty. And becoming more popular here. Friends of friends have just named their DD Amelie.

Bert2e · 15/04/2011 16:00

It's too popular round here for my liking :-(

breatheslowly · 15/04/2011 16:29

Lovely - and well enough known that it doesn't matter that you are not French.

WannabeNigella · 15/04/2011 16:31

Love it!

kerala · 15/04/2011 16:49

Be prepared to be one of a very big crowd. Off the top of my head I can think of 5.

SolarPanel · 15/04/2011 17:41

It's a bit of a fashion name. Amelia is more classic.

marzipanlover · 15/04/2011 17:52

Love it!

MelinaM · 15/04/2011 18:19

Absolutely love Amelie, there are a lot of little Amelie's about though ..I put it down to a certain film! Milie or Elie I would thinkSmile

iskra · 15/04/2011 20:46

I know lots of little Amelies, none of whom are French heritage. V popular here.

MrsLukeDanes · 15/04/2011 20:56

I have an Amelie under 2 and know of 2 others, much more common than you think. (Although I would choose it again as I love it and think that's the most important thing!) Just don't pick it if you want to be unique!

kitkat1000 · 15/04/2011 21:05

like it but like the others have said - its very popular!

youngjoly · 15/04/2011 21:20

I used to love Amelie. Now, not quite so keen. Think I prefer Amelia. That said, I don't actually know any little Amelies.

CharlieCoCo · 15/04/2011 21:30

i love Amelie, its becoming very popular though so come school, your child may be Amelie (first letter of surname) lol. i like Millie or Mila for NN.

4sophia · 15/04/2011 21:33

I think we may have found THE ONE. We both love it and tbh popularity doesn't really bother us. For nn. we were thinking along the lines of Millie, Mimi, Elle (we're not so keen on Ellie or Ami). Thanks for the feedback ladies.

I love it and the popularity doesn't bother me. I would use if for a DD.

But don't "murder" it when you say it. I've heard so many people say "Amerlie" it's pron "Amillie"

EricNorthmansMistress · 18/04/2011 11:23

cliche cliche cliche

but if you don't care about that then it's fine.

MamaLazarou · 18/04/2011 11:41

Don't like it at all. It reminds me of that awful film with that dreadful simpering woman. It also sounds almost identical to Emily.

Ephiny · 18/04/2011 11:55

It's a nice name, though in the UK people might tend to mishear/spell as Emily...

ShirleySharpeyes · 18/04/2011 12:15

I know three Amelie's under 4. I think it is a little twee.

juneybean · 18/04/2011 12:19

I know two in the north
