DH and I have a 2 year old called Olive Eliza Marie, and we are struggling to find a name which 'goes' with Olive! Any suggestions welcome!

Ooh, Emilia is lovely! Have discussed with DH and have whittled it down to three possibilities:
Amber Daisy Eve
Emilia Florence Eve
Ottlilie Saffron Eve

Eve is DH's beloved mother who passed away two days after I found out I was pregnant.

Love Amber with it, less twee than a plant theme but nice to keep nature in mind.

I love Olive!

Olive and Tabitha - Olly and Tabby - sweet.
Olive and Cecily
Olive and Violet

Olive and Ottilie = beautiful.

Amber isn't in the same league as Olive plus it's really popular.

Emilia is really on trend right now, as it's being used as an alternative to the uber-popular Amelia.

I think that as Olive is one of those beautiful names that isn't popular/overused, it should be paired with another beautiful and less used name, and Ottilie fits that perfectly.

Artichokes · 16/04/2011 00:38

I agree that Amber is not a good match. Olive is unusual, traditional and funky. Amber is none of those things.

Ottille is ok, but French and if you have no French connections it's slightly random.

Emilia is nice but dull and uber on trend. I know several Emilias born this year. Olive deserves something more interesting and unusual.

If you want to commemorate your MiL why not to Evelyn or Evangaline as a first name?

Lauren?

CarefulWithThatAxeEugene · 16/04/2011 01:11

I'm afraid you'll find that Olive is not as unusual as all that. It seems to have been seized upon by those who are shunning Olivia as too common popular, and is thus the Next Big Thing.

Lauren was all the rage in the 80s/90s, so will be very much underused now.

I like Violet or Anna

Violet Amadea Eve
Anna Celandine Eve

Olive has been on the rise but as of yet, it's not uber-popular. The 2010 statistics from the Office of National Statistics will give more of a clue as to which way Olive is heading, but in 2009, it's rise seemed to have slow down a bit.

In 2007, it was ranked #623 and was used 56 times, and it then had a big leap in 2008 to #445 and was used 95 times. The big leap may have been as a result of Sacha Baron Cohen and Isla Fisher naming their daughter Olive in October 2007.

Yet in 2009 it had a much smaller climb, rising to #428, and was used 97 times (just two more than had been named Olive in 2008).

Olive will certainly be one of the names I'll be looking out for when the 2010 statistics come out in September/October time.

I can't think of any positive connections with Olive as a name. It brings to mind Olive Oyl, a drab shade of green, and food that is an acquired taste. (I do love olives, btw, but wouldn't name a child after one. Ditto garlic, chilli, Gorgonzola etc.)

Why choose it?

CarefulWithThatAxeEugene · 16/04/2011 14:45

I don't like it much either - I associate it with Olive from 'On The Buses' who was portrayed as the frumpiest and most unattractive woman imaginable. And dim into the bargain. Sorry!

MirandaGoshawk · 16/04/2011 14:53

Have just remembered a lady at our church when I was a child who was called Olive. She did actually look a bit like Olive from On the Buses ('twas the glasses). Hmm

Reminds me of an old lady's comment at a baby's Christening, with all the lovely flowers in the world and they've named her after a nut (Hazel not Cashew)

missmelo · 18/04/2011 00:56

Olive and Rowan? Olive and Sam, Olive and Violet?

KristinaM · 18/04/2011 01:06

Violet is a lovely name but too similar to olive IMO

Agree amber doesn't go, too modern

IRis and ivy hard to say with olive
