oh god no not if you're bringing her up in an UK

JemimaMop · 11/04/2011 21:20

I like Gudrun.

But then I also like Gisela, so I may be a bit odd Grin

elishbetty · 11/04/2011 21:21

Monica
Allessandra
Gisela

SouthGoingZax · 11/04/2011 21:22

Sorry they both sound rather ugly names. If you really have to choose one of those two then Margrit.

notanumber · 11/04/2011 21:39

Plenty of Swiss names also sound good in English. I don't think Margit or Gudren are two of them.

Those names don't reflect both cultures (assuming you are a Brit) or IMO sound at all nice to the English ear, for some reason.

How about:

Hanneli
Liana
Brigitte
Jana
Eleonora
Katja
Gisele

notanumber · 11/04/2011 21:41

Or how about Marielle? That's similar to Margit but sounds much nicer to the English ear.

LoopyLoopsChupaChups · 11/04/2011 21:42

Sorry, but I agree with the others.

They sound harsh to me, I don't think they go very well into English.

elishbetty · 12/04/2011 00:00

margrit not margit

Ah, potayto potahto. You say Margrit, I say minging Margit.....

It's still not great, I'm afraid.

It does sound like Margaret to English ears, I suppose, but it's unusual for a baby in this country - usually Margarets are known as Meg or Maggie and so forth.

Italiangreyhound · 12/04/2011 02:31

I don't know if all these names are Swiss but other have said them and they are lovely
Hanneli
Liana
Brigitte
Allessandra
Gisela

To me Margrit or Gudrun do not sound nice. Sorry, I mean if you like them you can use them, it is your baby, but to an English ear, well Margrit sounds like Margaret so she would be forever telling people how to pronounce and spell her name. That may also be the case with some of the names I've just mentioned but some, like Hanneli, Liana and Gisela are good because I am guessing they are pronounced as they are spelled.

Maybe good to check out the meanings too. Margret ("pearl"), Gudrun (Who knows the secrets of battle - according to the website I just saw).

Good luck and congratulations.

alarkaspree · 12/04/2011 02:55

I like Margrit.

Gudrun is one of the worst names for a girl I've ever heard, sorry.

mathanxiety · 12/04/2011 03:33

How about Dagmar?

If I had to choose between the OP names I would go with Margrit, though I know a Swiss Margret. I like Gudrun but not as much as Margrit (or Margret).

IWouldNotCouldNotWithAGoat · 12/04/2011 04:02

Gudrun is really ugly. Margrit is ok.

activate · 12/04/2011 08:48

Margrit is too close to Magrat from Terry Pratchett

iskra · 12/04/2011 08:53

Julianna.

kreecherlivesupstairs · 12/04/2011 08:53

Will you be living in the German, French or Italian speaking part of Switzerland?
We were in the German speaking part and, IME the harsher sounding names were most popular.

BabCNesbitt · 12/04/2011 14:21

Going against the rest of the thread here, but I really like Gudrun! I think it's a beautiful old-fashioned name. Alternatively, if it was a Germanic name you were interested in, how about Gretchen?

Prunnhilda · 12/04/2011 14:24

I love the name Gudrun, it's really strong and (I don't need to say this) unusual.

Margrit I am less swung by, but only because I know a mad old Swiss woman called Margrit who has two adopted children and is quite racist about them Shock
