Isolde - Pronounciation?

Is it 'Is-OL-deh' (rhymes with alder)?

Or is it 'Is-OLD-eh' (rhymes with shoulder)?

Or without the 'eh' altogether??

the first one

peanutbutterkid · 11/04/2011 15:56

I thought it'd be "eeeSOLD" Blush.

discobeaver · 11/04/2011 16:29

I know an Isolde, it's the first one. Well, she pronounces it that way anyway.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 11/04/2011 16:41

The first one except I thought it was an 'ee' sound rather than an 'iz'

helendigestives · 11/04/2011 16:53

Well, I just learned that I've been pronouncing 'alder' incorrectly...

DownyEmerald · 11/04/2011 17:10

After struggling with the difference between your first and second one - looks clear typed, saying it out loud caused me problems! I would say the second one.

I know an Yseult. I think Isolde is easier.

SolarPanel · 11/04/2011 17:21

I'd pronounce it Izz-OLL-du.

greenzebra · 11/04/2011 17:41

Ee -Zold with a silent 'e' on the end. Thats how they pronounce it in the movie.

mummytime · 11/04/2011 17:52

If its German origin the final e is pronounced as a "a". Which it is for the Opera.

virginiasmonalogue · 11/04/2011 17:54

iz-old

cherrycocacola · 11/04/2011 19:27

The Isolde I know is pronounced Iz-old-uh, as the final is is pronouned 'a'. Her nn is Zolly (if you wanted to know!)

cherrycocacola · 11/04/2011 19:28

Whoops! Should say 'final 'e' is pronounced 'a'!'

WishIWasRimaHorton · 11/04/2011 19:32

definitely eez-OL-duh (without the eez being too long; not iz- but not eeeeeez either, IYSWIM), if you are going for the german pronunciation which is the only way i know it

blueberrymoon · 11/04/2011 20:38

Thank you all. Hmm.. think I'll steer clear. Even though I do like! (makes me think fairy tale princess)

Too late, but I've been thinking about this all day!

I think its Iss-older

blueberrymoon · 11/04/2011 21:30

Thanks Downy :) There seems to be lots of different pronunciations!
