I'm being induced on Monday and we had thought thatwe would wait until we met our little one before deciding on a name. The longer I wait though, the more names we are adding to our list, so I'm panicking now in case we'll never decide!

Our surname is Smith, and I wanted something that didn't start with an 'S' and was a bit more unusual to counter our boring surname! What do you like best, or is tgere any more I can add?

Megan
Ellen
Lucy
Nia
Naomi
April
Emily
lorna
Amy

Morgan
Thomas
Ben
Andrew
James

Thanks xx

Naomi is fab, will be the name of any DD I have in the future!!
Also like Lorna, Nia and Ellen.

Sorry but not keen on the rest but that's just cos I like fairly uncommmon names and yours are quite popular.

Thanks!

I take the point about them being quite popular. I'm stuck because I usually prefer traditional names but was trying to think of something to go with Smith to make it more unusual. Failing miserably with the boys names though - the one I thought was the most unusual, Morgan, seems to be popular at the moment!

Nothing wrong with popular names!

My faves are Ellen (NN Nell..?), Nia and Amy. I don't know many little Amys, mostly ones in their late 20s early 30s, so that will, in fact, be quite uncommon in her age group.

Ben and James are my fave boys. Love James.

I like Naomi best of your girls' list and Ben best for a boy.

MelinaM · 09/04/2011 10:38

Some more suggestions or you:

Alexandra/Alexandria
Aurelia
Beatrice
Cosima
Eleanor/Elinor

Josephine nn Posy
Leonie ...not so traditional but a less popular alternative to Naomi.
Ophelia
Rosalie
Rowena

Alexander
Balthazar
Benedict
Christopher nn Kit
Inigo
Jeremy
Mattias
Phineas
Reuben
Theodore nn Theo/Teddy
Winston

April is nice.

Also like Alexandra, Helena and my favourite name at the moment Emmeline.

CharlieBoo · 09/04/2011 12:13

I like Lucy and Emily for girls and James for a boy. These names will stand the test of time. April I really don't like. I have an April birthday and would hate to be called April. FWIW I am a 32 year old Lucy and my brother is James (he's 34). Babies are still being called these names and still will be in another 30 years. They won't date. Good luck x

doublemuvver · 09/04/2011 13:19

How about Lillia?

ColonelBrandonsBiggestGroupie · 09/04/2011 19:55

Naomi or James.

sunshinescarlett · 09/04/2011 21:25

How about Lucia or Emilia as alternatives to Lucy and Emily?

I have a Ben so am a little biased but love James.

cece · 09/04/2011 21:29

Out of your boy's names I would go for Andrew or Thomas

Girl's names I like Ellen, Nia or Naomi

Clary · 10/04/2011 00:38

If you want something unusual, the names on yr list to avoid are:
Megan
Ellen (lots of Ellies)
Lucy
Emily
Amy

One of those in most primary classes IME. Lots and LOTS of Emilys esp.

Boys - all your names are very popular except Morgan, which is maybe more commonly a girls name? and perhaps Andrew, which is more of a name of my generation (aged in 40s now) - lots of Andies at my Uni. I do know a coupl eof primary aged Andrews tho.

Don't get me wrong, nothing wrong with names like Emily and James and Tom and Amy - but I know so so many of them, aged from 14 downwards.

Clary · 10/04/2011 00:39

Sorry, I meant to add to my last par - OP has specifically asked for a more unusual name so I wanted to make her aware ot the popularity of those she suggests.

It's hard to know sometimes, if you don't have children already or work in a school.

Kate333333 · 10/04/2011 06:42

Thanks everyone. It's good to hear your thoughts and alternative suggestions for us.

I haven't got offended by anything so don't worry Clary! I already thought that the names we like were popular anyway, and to be honest writing them on here has just helped us to confirm tge ones we like the most out of them, and that perhaps we aren't going to like anything very unusual anyway!

I think we are now looking at Morgan Thomas for a boy and Amy or Nia Lorna for a girl. The middle names are from our grandparents and we live in Wales where Morgan is more often used for a boy, and Nia is also a Welsh name.

thanks everyone. Keep em coming!

Iona
Isla
Romilly
Saskia
Clara
Louisa

growing3rdbump · 10/04/2011 08:21

I'm also looking for a more unnusual name for dc3. I wish I could use Naomi as I love that name, but we already have a Nyah (variant of Nia). I have also been considering names like;
Tamsin
Clara
Esme
Ivy
Ava

argylesocks · 10/04/2011 08:49

Nia is very nice and unusual but doesn't go with Lorna. I like it much better than Amy though. Do you have to use Lorna? Nia Elise or Nia April sound much nicer
