playing a ridiculous game with DH naming DC2 after favourite tipples, single malts came up and after the hilarity of Glenmorangie and Glenliddich, Talisker came up

I really like it!

AM I being pregnant and weird? Apparently it is a bona fide scottish name

Personally I wouldn't its a pretty popular whisky and you know whats its like on here for people laughing at times (think of all those Tia Marias for example!)

Bookswapper · 08/04/2011 22:17

pregnany and weird...sorry

pitterpatterfeet · 08/04/2011 22:20

I think it's nice but too strong a booze connotation for me - sorry

MsHighwater · 08/04/2011 22:21

It is a bona fide Scottish name... for a single malt!

Have you considered Monkey Shoulder? (also a genuine whisky - really tasty, according to my dh).

Sheep Dip?

Edradour?

Laphroaig?

Bruichladdich?

Dalwhinnie?

Caol Ila?

GirlWithTheMouseyHair · 08/04/2011 22:22

oh bugger, back to the drawing board, was hoping maybe it wasn't THAT popular a whisky drink! (bloody tasty though!)

um....Edradour? shit, I quite like that one too

Monkey Shoulder isn't the nicest whisky on the market, but it's better than Bell's

SingingSands · 08/04/2011 22:23

It's not a Scottish name for people though! I know a few dogs called Talisker!

MsHighwater · 08/04/2011 22:24

dh says anything's better than Bell's Grin

Needanewname · 08/04/2011 22:25

Mmmmmm Edradour

SingingSands · 08/04/2011 22:26

If you like Islay whiskies, how about Islay? (pronounced eye-la)

There are lots of men on the island called Islay, named after the island. It's a male name.

GirlWithTheMouseyHair · 08/04/2011 22:31

Really? Hmmm, it sounds a bit, well, girlie if you're in southern england though.

Edradour and Talisker sound quite beefy and, well, peaty!

Maybe I'll have to get a dog just so I can use the name

my chum's cat is Talisker. yes very well known single malt.

have been on the whisky distillery tour round Islay. on bicycles. one of the most ridiculously drunken and fun weekends ever. highly recommended.

notprEGGersjustchocolate · 08/04/2011 22:36

Dinnae dae it.

salander · 08/04/2011 22:38

I know a boy called talisker! Tal for short. I rather like it.

midnightexpress · 08/04/2011 22:39

ROFL. Do it, but don't ever come to Scotland on holiday and expect people not to be smirking.

MsHighwater · 08/04/2011 22:39

All the people named Isla I've ever known (mostly spelled that way, too) have been female. Never ever ever met a male Isla(y) including during a holiday on the island (recommended).

Needanewname · 08/04/2011 22:44

Edradour is nto al all peaty (why I like it), tis quite a sweet one

Asinine · 08/04/2011 22:44

On the Scottish theme, Midge is a good name for a boy. As in Midge Ure. Especially if he bites Smile

schroeder · 08/04/2011 22:45

We had a cat called Talisker RIP. Sad

My absolutelyist favourite whisky

I don't think you can use it for a person though

SingingSands · 08/04/2011 22:55

MsHighwater- I agree, its only an Island traditional male name, you won't find it on the mainland.

SingingSands · 08/04/2011 23:00

Midge! Brilliant.

Achneinmeinbein · 09/04/2011 19:19

I love Talisker! But unfortunately agree that the whiskey association is too strong to use. A shame. I also think Laphroaig would be a great name.

How about raiding Scottish place names for inspiration? I was really keen on Erskine and Troon when thinking of names for dd (Erskine for a boy, Troon for a girl) though think I am completely alone in thinking the latter is a lovely name...

MillsAndDoom · 09/04/2011 19:29

No no no

Galena · 09/04/2011 20:03

We did actually seriously consider Caol Ila for a girl. Only rejected it because it's nigh on impossible to guess the pronunciation at first sight or to guess the spelling from the pronunciation.

We have a Scottish Isle for DD instead... Skye.

GirlWithTheMouseyHair · 10/04/2011 09:01

I actually have Erskine on the list too!! DH was born in Stirling so counts himself part scot and my family are from Cardiff so count ourselves part Welsh so it'd be nice to have a smattering of Scot/Welsh options

Oh damn, I reeeeeeeeeeally reeeeeeeeeeeally like Talisker, and Tal for short. It's so cool! salander does the boy you know get teased much? Seeing as we live in London, is it really that big a deal?! Will make his 21st birthday present easy to think up!
