Thisfeelsweird - would you find it lss offensive if the OP had a reason and said 'I really ahte X name, does anyone actually like it?' surely that would be worse.

The OP is not mentioning any names in particular, she is asking for the general consensus of which names people associate with different words.

FWIW my DS' name is mentioned on most hate lists and it's one of those names where half the town has it and the other half hates it :o

Here here upyourdiva! Thanks :)

Haha I am the OP, and my son's name is 'boring' - not offended in the slightest!!! Why should I be, and why should anybody else be? We all know that some names are (in our own opinion) 'ugly'. And I once started a thread for opinions on a name I would have actually considered for my DC, and it got slatered! That felt much worse (and more personal) than a random name that just happens to be mine or my DC's being called 'boring' or 'ugly'. And as for being 'mean-spirited'..?! I'm confused. thisfeelsweird isn't asking somebody what they think of a name, the same as asking them to be 'critical and judgemental'?

Thanks to all those of you who have taken this thread as intended, and joined in the fun!!

(Gee whiz, at least I didn't mention the 'ch' word...!) Wink

I'm going to do this regardless: if I've picked anyone's name here in particular it is not meant to be offensive it's probably just because I personally don't like the name, not that YOU/YOUR child is ugly/boring...

  1. pretty/handsome - Annabel(le)/Ralph (pron. Rafe)
  2. ugly - Mildred/Fergus
  3. boring - Sue/James (family prejudice, stupid numbers of generations of Jameses)
  4. mysterious/unusual - Xanthe/Jacobi
  5. classic - Elizabeth/Arthur
  6. hippy - Sage/Bracken
  7. romantic - Marianne/Brandon (Jane Austen has a lot to answer for)
  8. cute/cheeky - Poppy/Hugo
olympialimpet · 07/04/2011 22:14

I'm obviously a very hippy mum judging by my dd and my ds's names appearing on peoples hippy lists Smile I'm pleased with that

ZombieComforts · 07/04/2011 22:18
  1. pretty/handsome Octavia/Cassian
  2. ugly Paige/Caleb
  3. boring Ann/Mike
  4. mysterious/unusual Morwenna/Ptolemy
  5. classic Alexandra/Alexander
  6. hippy Leaf
  7. romantic Juliet/Romeo
  8. cute/cheeky Alice/Felix

Ooooh olympia, I'm intrigued to know what your hippy names are because my DS's middle name is too!

OP posts:
olympialimpet · 07/04/2011 22:36

blueberrymoon is your ds middle name Rowan?

upyourdiva · 07/04/2011 22:37

Trina - 3. boring - Sue/James (family prejudice, stupid numbers of generations of Jameses)

Totally agree! DP is James as is his father, grandfather, great grnadfather... and so on for another 2 generations!

His prick of a dad fell out with me when I refused point blank to name his DS' first born James! 5 years on he still hates me for it, but I did compramise and put it as a middle name :o

blueberrymoon · 07/04/2011 22:41

Nooo olympia, it does begin with 'R' though :)

OP posts:
olympialimpet · 07/04/2011 22:44

Rainbow? Smile

blueberrymoon · 07/04/2011 22:49

Nope, guess again!!! ...

...Oh okay, it's River :) what are yours?!

and for what it's worth, I actually really like James, and it's DH's middle, but HE vetoed it!

OP posts:
olympialimpet · 07/04/2011 23:11

Well one of the names is Rowan

blueberrymoon · 07/04/2011 23:15

DD or DS? I really love that name, but our surname is very similar so it's a no-go! :(

OP posts:
olympialimpet · 07/04/2011 23:18

It's ds's name.

blueberrymoon · 07/04/2011 23:26

Lovely. Hippyish yet classy.

OP posts:
olympialimpet · 07/04/2011 23:28

I really like River too, in fact I like most of the 'hippy' names on this thread Grin

blueberrymoon · 07/04/2011 23:34

Our DS has a very popular aka boring Grin first name (that I LOVE!), and River as a middle, which is obviously less popular and hippy/naturey! For (hypothetical) DC2, I'd love to follow that trend, and need more inspiration for hippy/nature names!! However, if it were to be a girl, I'd be tempted to go for the more unusual name as the first name!

I laughed out loud at "Here we go" too ladies! There's always one ...or twoGrin
Anyway, long may the fun continue! Loving Bracken and Ptolemy! x

blueberrymoon · 08/04/2011 00:17
Grin

I am loving Bracken too! Ptolemy reminds me of phlebotomy though... Hmm

OP posts:
blueberrymoon · 08/04/2011 00:19

And Mel, I still love that 'name', that you remember well Wink

OP posts:
MelinaM · 08/04/2011 23:05

Ahhh yes indeed, that's not goodGrin

You've simply got to use it at some point, it's an awesome name, and goes so well with DS's monika! I purchased a top from Jack Wills today called Somersby! ..I had a little giggle to myselfGrin
