Please will someone tell me why?

It's not a name.
It will make a child's life difficult.
It's not something that an adult man would want to be called.
All the notable peoplel called Sonny are actually called something else.
It doesn't sound nice.

Imagine being an old man desperately trying to maintain his dignity and being called Sonny by teenage nurses.

Imagine trying to manage a team of cheeky employees and being called Sonny.

So, why?

NatMac · 06/04/2011 17:33

I like it - but not sure how it would translate for a grown man. It has made me think of the name 'Manni' though, which a friend has just named their baby. So in a way it makes me think of Icelandic or Norwegian types of names. Not sure, think it may also depend on your surname.

Sorry that's probably no help at all!

sparkle12mar08 · 06/04/2011 17:35

Vile sorry. And very common/chavvy indeed. I'd wonder what on earth possessed the parents.

Valinor · 06/04/2011 17:42

I like it but only as a nn for Orson.

I love it. I know a couple of them. One is short for Jackson, the other has sonny as his full name

toomuchtimeonline · 06/04/2011 18:28

I like it. What about Wilson as the full name?

beangirl2 · 15/04/2011 21:43

young-fella-me-lad?? What a pathetic comment. I suppose you like John for a name.
I love the name Sonny go ahead with it!

pilates · 16/04/2011 08:38

Not a great lover of the name, but if you are a bit of a hippy not the norm family then it could work, go for it.

mickeylou · 17/04/2011 13:57

I love it. Absolutely not chavvy!! In fact if I can talk dh into dc3 it would be top of my boys list. I never get these comments about but will it suit a 30 year old brain surgeon or 70 year old man. Whatever you pick is going to be current now and out of date in 20 years.

randomimposter · 17/04/2011 14:40

I actually rather like Sonny, though I'm a total Godfather fan so am a bit biased. I do know of a couple, one a 3 year old, one a few weeks old and younger brother to a H0ney. I kid you not...Grin

BUT I do think it lacks gravitas as an adult name OR sets that person up to have to fulfil a BIG personality name.

CarefulWithThatAxeEugene · 17/04/2011 17:03

Whatever you pick is going to be current now and out of date in 20 years.

It's not about being "current" or "out of date" though, and anyway it doesn't work like that. As we all know there are fashions in names, and we judge our names against our contemporaries. Thus Joan and Jean are elderly ladies now, and their names aren't out of date for them, they are normal names in the context of that generation.

The point is that generally speaking, some names (usually nicknames) suit children but not adults.

mickeylou · 17/04/2011 17:34

I did actually mean "out of date" in the sense that a mother in 20 years time is not going to call her newborn the same name. Sorry if I wasn't specific enough.

CarefulWithThatAxeEugene · 17/04/2011 19:17

That's what I thought you meant. But regardless of that, this Sonny will be a young man in 20 years time and still stuck with a name which many of us feel is only suited to a little boy. Or, as jollster says, needs a certain type of personality to carry it off.

meditrina · 17/04/2011 19:19

Could you use it as a nn either for James or any name ending ....son?

AuraofDora · 17/04/2011 19:25

op i love it
lovely name and not just for little boys
sonny boy williamson sonny rollins
...sonny is fab name
i know a Sunny, think it's short for something, and he is a man, it's nice

SoupDragon · 17/04/2011 19:26

Would you call a daughter "girlie"? Or Lassie. That would be good.

FoxyRevenger · 17/04/2011 19:28

It's a nickname, but not a nice one.

It's kind of dismissive, patronising, in that someone round here would say 'piss off, sonny' that sort of thing.

I don't get it at all.

missmelo · 18/04/2011 01:53

It sounds ever so slightly twee :) maybe the little chap can carry it off though, when you see him you will know for sure

mrsSmurf · 18/04/2011 15:05

I love this name, had it on our list but had a dd but if ever we have a ds in future it will still be on the list. I don't buy into the whole "it's not a name for a grown man" argument, lots of names that are currently popular could fall into that category.
Times change and so do names, you will always get comments from people who think parents should stick to a list of "safe" names like Daniel, James, but we are all different and have different tastes.

CarefulWithThatAxeEugene · 18/04/2011 16:19

lots of names that are currently popular could fall into that category.

Quite right, and I'd feel the same way about them.Wink

mrsSmurf · 18/04/2011 16:27

well as I said we all have different opinions which is what mumsnet is for, it just gets a little boring with the same lines being rolled out.

what other names do you like op?.

SoupDragon · 18/04/2011 21:36

Parents should always remember that it is not them who has to live with their name choice, it is the child and that they are not naming a baby, they are naming a person.

timetomove · 18/04/2011 21:42

Sophie Ellis Bextor has a son called Sonny. ALso one called Kit.
