As we discussed the name for my bump my eldest DD, she is 11, said she hates her name, my 4 year old is yet to express an opinion...and so as my third DC is born I want to ensure i get it right!! I grew up hating my name until I 'grew into it', i want it to be a name my child will like throughout their life.. I like names which aren't common (as DD hates being one of many of Amys) but arent too out there or eccentric!
So far I have... Amy and Kyra...
I like...
Lotty/ie
Tegan
Mia
Thea
Lydia
Olivia (bit common though)
Evie
Saffy
Callie
Tilly
Megan

Opinions!

I don't think you can ever be sure of getting it right, since it is such a subjective thing. The name that everyone likes doesn't exist.

For example, people on here seem to love Lydia on your list, but I think it's really frumpy and not very nice. Tegan is really not a great name IMO, but I love Megan.

All you can do it choose a name you like, and just hope that your DC will like it, or learn to like it. :)

Karbea · 05/04/2011 16:29

I'm not sure you will get it right either, I hate my name (I think it dates me), but it's my name, doesn't everyone dislike something about themselves?
I like the name Amy btw Smile

I think I like Lottie (I assume Charlotte?) best of all.

I know a friend's daughter who was nick-named 'Spotty Lottie' at school. Kids can be cruel.....

I think Evie is lovely.

VivaLeBeaver · 05/04/2011 16:31

There are a lot of Evies about. Ditto Mia. Really, really dislike Tegan.

I like Lottie, Lydia and Tilly the best.

Choose a name that provides options for shortening/pet names if you're worried about your child growing up to dislike what they've been given. If you like Lottie, call her Charlotte. Evie could be Evelyn. Tilly could be Matilda. Those names all have numerous options for pet names, but they're not stuck with them.

lockets- have you found Thea to be common- any others in her school etc?
The thing i liked about my name was NO ONE else had it in my school/never really came across anyone with it...

exoticfruits · 05/04/2011 16:54

I don't think that you can say what they will like. I would go with something that gives options e.g. I know a Jamie who insisted on being James as soon as he was able and luckily the full name was on the birth certificate.
Therefore if you like Lottie I would call her that but have Charlotte so that she can revert or have Charley if she prefers. Likewise Tilly could have Matilda giving the full option or Mattie etc.
I don't think that you can object to Megan, but personally I would hate Tegan and Mia.

I would avoid anything that ends in a ee or a as you already have one of each. But then am not a fan of Tegan or Megan so Saffron is the only one for me on your list! How about Morgan for a girl?

mimmymouse · 05/04/2011 19:59

I adore the name Thea. I wanted Theodora on our name list but DH vetoed. It's a top name.

One other thing - we gave our daughter an unusual first name. However, her middle name is Rose. We are of the opinion that if she finds her first name abhorrent in the future, she can use Rose instead. If we are lucky enough to have more children in the future, giving them a less outrageous middle name is our plan in order to placate them in future, should that be required! (PS My aunt did this. Has been known by her middle name practically her whole life.)

What about boys?? Sorry you prob missed my second post..

I really like Thea, Tilly or Lotty for a girl, Harry, Jack or Robbie for a boy but not sure how they all go together!?
I really don't like the idea of naming a girl Charlotte- its a nice name but I want something a bit different/less common.. and I'm worried people woulnt pick up on the shortened version! Same with Robert to Robbie.
I've crossed off Mia, Tegan (i only liked tegan because of the 'my girls best friend' book if anyones read it?! her nickname was tiga which i liked!), Saffy i like but a friend named their dog it :S!

Any more opinions esp boys showed DH this thread and he was outraged I accidently posted before I put on our boys list!!
thanks!

I really wouldn't call your child 'Robbie' without recourse to another name. I just think it could sound a bit childish when he's older. What about Robin? Though conversely I think 'Lottie' can be a name on its own without the need for Charlotte...I make no sense!

Harry and Jack are a bit too common for my liking, especially as you said you loved having an unusual name. Same for Ollie, Sam, William, Ben etc. Just too many of them, all the time! I like Reuben though, and it's not as popular as the others.

What about:

Max
Leo
Rex
Rafael
Noah
Ned
Fred
Kit

Love Thea and it goes well with your other girls' names too.

exoticfruits · 06/04/2011 07:47

I wouldn't go for Robbie-he may hate it. You can have the long names Robert and Charlotte and people will call them the short if you and they never use the long BUT the DC has the option of reverting. Robbie isn't going to be very good on a 60yr old.
I like Benjamin (it is nice to have family names)George,William and Samuel.
Every other baby seems to be Oscar at the moment!

juneau · 06/04/2011 08:04

I don't like shortened names as birth cert names either. When your child is little you can call him/her what you want, but please give them the choice for when they grow up. All these Robbie/Ollie/Tilly names are fine for little kids, but what about when they're 30 or 50? Too cutesy IMO and if I had a little kid name I'd hate it as an adult. A full name gives you (and your DC), a lot more options. If you give a nickname as the full name then you're stuck with that one choice.

Plus, you say you like names that are uncommon, yet you've got a lot of VERY popular names on your lists.

Cattleprod · 06/04/2011 08:11

Re: boys names. You say you like unusual names that aren't that common, then you go on to list practically the current top 10 boys names. Either you need to come to terms that your son will have the same name as many other boys, or you need to spend a bit more time researching boys names to find something you like that isn't as comon.

SilkStalkings · 06/04/2011 09:16

People will pick up on whatever nickname you introduce them with. I do think it's important to have a respectable grown up name on your birth certificate at least, possibly a human right even.

MrsWitcher · 06/04/2011 11:32

I think if you named her Charlotte but called her Lottie then everyone else would too!
My DDs are Lizzie and Kitty but registered at Elizabeth and Catherine. Nobody ever calls then anything other than Lizzie and Kitty though.

MrsWitcher · 06/04/2011 11:33

Likewise, if you want to call him Robbie, call him Robert. We have Ollies coming out of our ears here. At least 2 in most classes.

EvenLessNarkyPuffin · 06/04/2011 11:43

If you're worried go for longer names that heve a variety of short forms eg as you like Lotte/ie put Charlotte on the birth certificate and call her Lotte/ie. Then if she doesn't like it she can be Charlotte or Charlie. Names like Evie, Saffy, Callie and Tilly don't really leave any scope for alteration. Evelyn, Saffron, Callista and Matilda do.

BikeRunSki · 06/04/2011 11:52

My name is very unusual for my age and I hated it for that !

purepurple · 06/04/2011 12:04

Every child hates their name at some point. It's another way that children have of telling you what a crap parent you are.
DS is Sam, except he wanted to be Gary.
DD is Alice, but she wanted to be Jemima, apparently. Hmm
They are never happy. If they have blue eyes then they want brown, blonde hair, they want to be brunette. Have a younger sister. No, they wanted an older brother.

eatyourveg · 06/04/2011 12:06

I'd go for Lottie or Tilly but would give them the full version of the names so that they can then have the option as to which one they prefer once they get older.

Megan as a third choice. Evies and Olivias are everywhere
