Naomi is Hebrew. We have a Naomi in my family and so to me Noemi just looks wrong.

seeker · 04/04/2011 22:19

People will think you can't spell. Honestly, don't do it.

I donlt think it's thought of as Christian or Jewish, although of course it was originally a Jewish name.

kat2504 · 04/04/2011 22:21

spell in Noémie and it is a proper French name. not very well known in this country however, and people might think that it looks like Naomi spelt wrong. If you are going to use a French name I think you should spell it the French way personally.

Many commonly used names have Hebrew origins - Rachel, Sarah, Ruth and countless others that I can't be bothered looking up. I don't think people would associate many of them with being specifically Jewish any more.

Grabaspoon · 04/04/2011 22:22

Agree it must be spelt correctly - otherwise it looks made up

MerryMarigold · 04/04/2011 22:22

I think the French version has an umlaut thing on the 'e'? (I think) which would make it look less like a spelling error of Naomi. I like the French version, but think that you would need a French connection. (I liked the French name Loic for a boy, but felt with no French connection that it was rather strange!). Naomi is a Hebrew/ Jewish name, but a lot of Christians use it too, as it is in the Old Testament (like Rebecca, Rachel, Ruth etc.)

Henwelly · 04/04/2011 22:25

looks to much like gnomie for my liking - sorry!!

PrettyCandles · 04/04/2011 22:25

Naomi, like most Bible-names, is international and doesn't seem particularly Jewish, Christian, or even any religion at all. I've known Naomies of all 3 styles.

But Noemi just looks - and sounds - plain wrong. I did not know this was the French spelling until I read the OP. Sorry to wear the judgey-pants, but I would have assumed that it was a chav spelling.

slartybartfast · 04/04/2011 22:26

i think it needs to be naomi,
or at least with the accent.
i hate misspellings

meditrina · 04/04/2011 22:28

When I saw Noemi, I thought it was misprint for Noami [ashamed Haribo eater emoticon]. I think the traditional spellings, either French or English are preferable.

NotaMopsa · 04/04/2011 22:29

the m and s model?

Finessa · 04/04/2011 22:53

I'd assume the parents couldn't spell, sorry.

I would pronounce it Gnome-y as in a garden gnome but am not sure that's correct. How would you pronounce it?

mamaesi · 05/04/2011 09:41

sorry I meant noemie... typed it last night when I was exhausted.

its pronunced "no - amy" sort of...its hard to type a french pronunciation.

thanks for responses. i still like it, but I am cautious of ethnic names that do not match my ethnicity...but i have such a mixed background and so will my children that I dont really relate to any of them in particular..

anyway i appreciate the comments...keep them coming.

Love Naomi - really would avoid Noemie - it looks wrong, sounds odd, and primary school teachers will probably struggle. Believe me - it only takes one or two primary staff to get it mixed up/wrong and it sticks with EVERYONE. (No me...)

virginiasmonalogue · 05/04/2011 10:12

I like the way it sounds but not how it looks. I also though it was pronounced with equal emphasis on each syllable, like no-em-ee, at least that's howmy french SIL pronounces it.

threefeethighandrising · 06/04/2011 00:33

I'm a great fan of unusual names, but I also thought you just couldn't spell, sorry.

CitizenOscar · 07/04/2011 22:54

My DH likes the name Noemie but I think that has a little to do with the gorgeous model from the M&S adverts... (luckily we're having a boy so didn't have to pursue this debate too far). I do think it's pretty, though, probably prettier than Naomi.

washnomore · 07/04/2011 22:56

TBH most folk pronounce Naomi incorrectly round here (NYOMEE anyone?), they wouldn't have a hope in hell of getting Noemie anywhere right.

Onion1968 · 08/04/2011 22:04

I would think you couldn't spell. Sorry

Journey · 09/04/2011 18:43

Yes, looks like you couldn't spell the name properly.

Achneinmeinbein · 09/04/2011 18:58

I think Noemie (with the accent I can't do on phone) is really pretty WITH a French accent. But sadly in UK will probably be pronounced No-Emmy or No-Amy at best, which I think sound ok but a bit odd (I prefer to Naomi though).

Wonder if you'd like Leonie? With acute accent over e so it's pronounced Lay Oh Nee. Think it is a French name English speakers can pronounce fine and somewhat similar? Or Noelle?

I've got 2 friends both called Noemi (and spelt like that) They are both Spanish and apparently that's how it's spelt in Spain? Personally I think it is a lovely name and have no trouble in pronouncing it but they both live in the UK and it drives the crazy that people rarely pronounce it properly! One just introduces herself as Naomi now!
