Is Caitlin that ubiquitous?

I keep reading that it's very common but I don't know any.
Also which family of names would you associate it with?
Thanks!

I love the name Caitlin but DH wasn't keen. I only know of 1 who 9 yo.

I'd say it was a middle ground name, not common or chavvy but not posh.

Perpetuallypregnant · 02/04/2011 22:56

I know loads. Doesn't matter though, use it if you like it. I have a Jessica and know loads of them too but shes not bothered.

smother · 02/04/2011 22:59

I love the name Caitlin - very pretty and much more interesting than Catherine for the nn Kate. I would be tempted to use it myself but have been a little put off by someone telling me it was c*** (hate that word!)

mathanxiety · 02/04/2011 23:01

It's a horrible mispronunciation of an Irish name, spelled the same but pronounced very differently. It has an American element to it, so Irish wannabe is where I would classify it.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 02/04/2011 23:12

Agree with Math. The name as most people use it bears no relation to the name as it should be so yes, Irish wannabe sums it up.

smother · 02/04/2011 23:17

What's the Irish pronounciation?

jumpyjack · 02/04/2011 23:20

Kate is much nicer. I lump it in with Brianna, Paige, Madison type names.

mathanxiety · 02/04/2011 23:29

Cawtch-leen or Cotch-leen.

It should be spelled with two fadas Cáitlín (Cawtch-leen) or at least one fada Caitlín (Cotch-leen).

CJMommy · 02/04/2011 23:36

My DD (4 months) is Caitlin Martha, we love it!. My mother is irish so calls her by the irish pronounciation.

SolarPanel · 03/04/2011 01:36

Yes

vaginiasmonalogue · 03/04/2011 12:54

Bit boring..

BuntyPenfold · 03/04/2011 13:02

I lump it with Paige, Madison, Taylor etc.
I don't really know why as I like both Kate and Lynne

stressheaderic · 03/04/2011 13:05

I don't mind Caitlin. But please, none of this Katelyn, Caitlynne, Catelinn, Kaite-lynne business (all pupils in Yrs 7-9).
Catherine much nicer.

MillsAndDoom · 03/04/2011 13:25

I know 2 both pronounced phonetically the English way, from non-Irish heritage.

There is also a 8yo girl in DDs school called Katelyn

Maternelle · 03/04/2011 18:10

DH is Irish and we would spell it Caitlín and pronounce Catlin, which is the way it is pronounced in my DH's family.
I am a bit worried about the fact it has been labelled a chav name on a few threads. Whatever a chav name is. DS is Finn.

I think it's nice, especially when pronounced 'catlin' rather than 'katelin'.

Reminds me of Dylan Thomas's wife, and also Caitlin Moran who is ace.

I prefer it said Kate-Linn unless the speaker has an Irish accent. Sounds pretentious otherwise.
It is so common (and yes, it is very common) I can't believe it's been labeled chav, no more chav than Sophie or George, honestly.

BikeRunSki · 04/04/2011 14:08

I know a 35ish yo Irish one, and a 3ish year old who is not Irish. I rather like it, but do think it is obviously Irish enough that the holder should Irish connections.

CharlieCoCo · 04/04/2011 19:27

i love Caitlin but pronounced kate lynn. i use to know someone whose name was pronounced as catlin, i dont like the way its meant to be pronounced. i dont care if its a 'fake' name, kate lynn sounds pretty lol

mathanxiety · 04/04/2011 19:33

The name Kathleen is an anglicised version of Caitlín (which is itself a diminutive of Caitríona, Irish for Catherine).

I really like the name Kathleen. It is a sort of classic imo.

Maternelle · 05/04/2011 20:18

I can't believe I am being put off a lovely name by some people I don't know labelling the name chav, whatever this means. DH is Irish with an Irish surname.
