How long did it take for your DC to suit their name?

... and does anyone think that their DC doesn't suit that name?

Does it take time fo babies/ children to grow into their names or do they 'become, that name straightaway?

I'm still not 100% sure my dt's suit their names. (They are 2!). It was a bit of a scramble at the last minute, they had no names for a week. My ds2 is definitely a Barney and dd is definitely a Claudia. But those are not their names!! Never mind. Their names are nice, and I'm sure they will be happy with them/ disappointed in them at various, different times in their lives. And maybe when they are 10 I will be more used to them. I've never had a problem with ds1's name for some reason...maybe I spent more time deciding on it. He also has a very obv 'nickname' so basically has 2 names, which kind of reflect 2 sides of himself.

I think that, with the help of hormones, having a real person with a real name rather than a wiggly bump is always going to feel odd for a while.

It is a gradual process as you get to know each other in my experience.

Mine took a while to suit their names as they are 'grown up' names, ie; not cute baby names. Now they're toddlers their names are fine.

hellokitty123 · 01/04/2011 11:46

Not sure how a name can 'suit' a baby anyway Hmm but we chose both dc's names long before they were born and they were always just their name, if that makes sense.

ajandjjmum · 01/04/2011 11:51

I think it's a case of you accepting the name yourself. Which sounds odd when you have (presumably) chosen it.

We couldn't decide on a name for DS - he was registered on the last possible day, and had always called him by the nickname we used when I was pregnant. Everyone one did - he was that nickname!

When he was 2 DH felt very strongly that although it might be cute for a baby, it certainly wouldn't be for a rugby player (!!!), so we all started to call him by his 'real' name. It took us ages to get used to it, but we did, and now can't imagine him as anything else.

I thought my son's name suited him the minute we decided it (about half an hour after he was born), but for the first few weeks I kept forgetting it and going to call him Ishmael or Isambard instead (no idea why - both lovely names but weren't on our shortlist - but I was quite ill after the birth, which might have had something to do with it).

LouMacca · 01/04/2011 12:21

DH and I had decided on the name B if we had a son. I told my SIL our choice (we were pregnant at the same time) and they then used the name

We obviously chose another name and it took a bit of time to accept that we would never have a B. As time has gone by it's the best thing that happened - our DS isn't a B, he is a D! Smile and our DN is a defnite B!

MalkieFraser · 01/04/2011 12:29

My daughter has 'been' her name since the second she emerged. Everybody agrees. Still haven't settled on something for the next one though, don't know what we're having, but nothing resonates as strongly as our daughters name did.

I like the names we've chosen for our next child, but can't imagine US having a child with THOSE names iykwim?

seeker · 01/04/2011 12:37

I love my dd's name - but I think the name we didn;t use would suit the person she is now better.

No big deal, though.

People get far too would up about finding "the perfect name" - then they get worried about it not suiting the baby because it't built up in theri head as su massive an issue.I'm sure nobody thought like that when everyone in England was called one of a small range of Biblical names!

Hedwig3 · 01/04/2011 12:37

It does seem to be easier choosing a name for the first child, we found that and have heard it from others.

What is your situation? Is it early days, or further down the road?

Finessa · 01/04/2011 16:34

When they start to be "naughty" - dropping food, spoons, bowls off their high chairs or making a bid for freedom crawling off at high speed you have to call them by their name constantly, which helps a lot.

Also when they start to talk they will narrate everything with their own name "Jamie sit" "Jamie dinner" "Jamie up"

This was when the names really became their own for me. I can't remember exactly when these happen though.

CharlieBoo · 01/04/2011 16:53

My ds has always suited his name, he just could never be anything else. Dd suited her name as a baby but it's a v girly name and although she looks the part (blonde hair, blue eyes) she is such a tomboy .... Although tbh it's so ironic that it works iykwim.

redstripeyelephant · 01/04/2011 20:50

DD1 suited her name straight away. DD2 it took til she was around 6 months if I'm honest. I would look at her repeating the name over and over and often imagined her with other names.

I think part of it is DD1 has the name I always knew I would call my daughter. DD2's name was chosen from a long list of names that we couldn't decide on. All lovely names and she probably would have suited any of them.

Now of course I love both names and couldn't imagine them being called anything else.

TeaDr1nker · 01/04/2011 21:08

It took about a year for me to get my head around DD name, we picked a name with a specific meaning IYSWIM, and DS took a week to decide the name but once we had decided that was that.

I do know of a girl who's name was changed when she was a year old for various reasons, so it can be done if you really don't think your child suits the name your gave them originally.

muminthemiddle · 02/04/2011 14:00

I think different people imagine names to suit different types iyswim.
Take a look on mumsnet and you will see the varyimg responses to what people think of a name.
For example I always imagined the name Charlotte to be a long haired, pale looking ,strong headed girl who is never highly groomed but more of a free spirtit.
Others will know Charlottes who are highly groomed short haired individuals.
