I need inspiration

otchayaniye · 30/03/2011 10:38

I don't know the sex yet as my 20 week scan keeps getting pushed back, but I want to think of some names and would like some outside inspiration.

My daughter is called Carmen (after her great grandmother) Lois (after my mother). I'd go with family names for this one but nothing grabs me.

We prefer names that don't end in 'a' or 'o' (although I quite like Cleo). Trenchant names, perhaps older names but not the old names that crowd the current list of 'most popular'. Nothing frilly or trisyllabic.

So far names that have popped into my head are Francis/Frances, Audrey, Lester, Joan (that's a family name, so would be good)

Secretly I really, really want call this child Clovis. We jokingly already call it Clovis. My husband is currently leaning towards Pebbles. Someone stop us!

I like Audrey and Joan or how about

Jean/Jeannie
Genevieve
Arabelle
Colette

All the others that come to mind end in a

otchayaniye · 30/03/2011 10:48

You know what, I really love Hedy, which is a contraction of your user name, but husband vetoed it as 'too ostentatiously old hollywood'. Ditto 'Romy'.

Regarding 'a' names. Can't really say why I prefer others. I won't rule them out certainly, if you have some good ones. I think they suit some children. Just hear a lot of really frilly three-syllable names where I am and I am more a fan of a plain simple name (despite my user name...)

Rosa
Anna
Nora
Sara
Cora
Una

I think there were others but can't remember now.

I like Romy too [smile

Hebe?

Hedwig3 · 30/03/2011 10:54

...I like simple names too Smile

minipie · 30/03/2011 11:03

Lester is a boy surely?

Hedy and Romy are great. Clovis, not sure, prefer Clover?

Hazel
Holly
Iris
Eden
Evelyn
Megan
Amber
Maeve
Tess
Beth
Ruth
Nina (yes it ends in A but very non-frilly)

Any good?

otchayaniye · 30/03/2011 11:24

Sorry, I didn't make it clear, I don't know the sex yet so am in the market for both boy and girl's name.

Thanks, keep them coming.

Clovis is a joke! We joked if we had a second child it would be Clovis (after Clovis Sangrail, hero of Saki short stories)

Thing is, we've referred and joked about it so much, and call the unborn child Clovis that we're becoming blind to the downsides (the child will be basically laughed out of town) and becoming really fond of it!

I like Evelyn. For both actually. And Jean

I need more boys names ... otherwise it will be Clovis!

otchayaniye · 30/03/2011 11:28

I like Tess as well.

Duncan, Duncan, Duncan. I love that name, also Adrian.

otchayaniye · 30/03/2011 11:32

I like Duncan. Adrian was the name of a former boss who touched me up once. So has connotations. It's a shame when that happens.

OP posts:
Voddy · 30/03/2011 11:38

I enjoy Kreecher popping up to suggest Duncan on all of the baby threads, it's at the point now when I'm a little disappointed not to see it suggested Grin

kreecherlivesupstairs · 30/03/2011 11:42

Thank you. One of these days my wish will be granted, someone will post regarding whether to choose one or the other. My work will have been done.

IslaValargeone · 30/03/2011 11:43

Somebody shoot me, but I find myself strangley drawn to Pebbles :o

systemsaddict · 30/03/2011 11:47

Audrey's lovely, it makes me think of Audrey Hepburn, so beauty and elegance, but is also a trenchant sort of a name.

infin · 30/03/2011 11:49

Can also see the attraction of Pebbles......perhaps you need a puppy too so you can use it!
Daphne
Bridget
Astrid
Rowan
Maude

Fergus
Jesse
Jared
Eugene

thirtysomething · 30/03/2011 11:58

I knew a French lad named Clovis - I think possibly named after a saint or historic character. Kind of suited him. I do think it sounds a lot like Hovis though!

Other suggestions for less mainstream names:
Xavier
Magnus
Eli
Aaron
Seth
Bryn
Otis
Julius
Orin
Theodore
Monty
Tristan

Rowen
Anastasia
Willow
Hyacinth
Millicent
Maud
Agnes
Beatrice
Lydia
Orphelia
Penelope
Xanthe
Belinda
Esther
Anastasia

BlueChampagne · 30/03/2011 12:55

There were several Frankish kings called Clovis, so if you're feeling brave ...

Otherwise:
Meryl
Meredith
Tamsin
Clea/Thea

I take it Miranda's out Grin

Marcus
Laurence
Arlo
Francis

kreecherlivesupstairs · 30/03/2011 13:36

Clovis is horrible. It sounds like something you use on nettle stings.
Choose Duncan, just for me. I'll even send money. I had a message from a poster who contributed to edgars quilt fund to say the cash had arrived. I am trustworthy.

ShowOfHands · 30/03/2011 13:39

My favourite names are:

Josephine
Aphra
Miriam
Mirabel
Edith
Ruth

Rafe
Emrys
Elijah
Seth
Silas
Wilf
Amos

Francagoestohollywood · 30/03/2011 13:46

OP, I had to Grin at your dh veto on Hedy "as 'too ostentatiously old hollywood'".
I like the name Hedy too. Does your dh knows that Hedy Lamarr was also a talented scientist and inventor?

otchayaniye · 30/03/2011 14:03

Yes he does! He has read her wonderfully sordid autobiography 'Ecstasy and Me'

I still might go for Hedy. It was the first name that popped into my head. But our surname begins with an 'h' so unsure if it is too alliterative (haven't really thought about that subject yet)

Thinking about it Kreecher. Why the strong attraction, out of interest?

OP posts:
Francagoestohollywood · 30/03/2011 14:09

Or you could choose as a tribute to Mel Brooks (if you are a fan of course)...

Jokes aside, I like Evelyne, Audrey and Joan. And Lester, like the guy from The Wire.

otchayaniye · 30/03/2011 14:12

Freamon as a middle name!

OP posts:
Francagoestohollywood · 30/03/2011 14:21

Of course I'd go for Omar.

IslaValargeone · 30/03/2011 14:32

Well if we are talking good tv shows I'll put Troells forward.
