Is it a bit odd that baby will have the same name as hamster? (deceased)

Some years ago, I thought it a bit odd that a friend had named her baby boy after a childhood pony she owned. It may have been a coincidence, but still.
Then here I am, about to name my baby (if indeed it is a boy - I could be worrying over nothing...) the same name as my DDs' now deceased hamster 'Tommy'.
Tom is the only, and believe me, only name DH and I can agree on, and he would undoubtedly get called Tommy. Does this really matter?

I have known ten or more Thomas s and Toms none were called Tommy.A great name ,My DNs name.

claricebeansmum · 28/03/2011 21:40

I unthinkingly name my DS after my now very dead guinea pig Blush

Oh gawd, don't say you know 10 or more Thomas' and Toms - I know its popular, but is just 'Tom' that popular at the moment? I want my girls to like the name we choose, but one DD is adamant about not having the Tommy hamster connection! Thanks for your input. Is DN darling nephew?

The baby won't know he shares a name with a dead hamster, so unless your DD makes a thing about it, it really doesn't matter.

eurycantha · 28/03/2011 21:53

Im sorry ``ive popped on from the nanny thread so the Thomas s i``ve known have been in the past and are now older the oldest 18 down to 5 I must say that I havent heard of a very young T om for a couple of years,Tom is my nephew.

Meglet · 28/03/2011 21:55

DD's middle name is the same as XP's childhood hamster.

I don't think it matters TBH.

sethstarkaddersmackerel · 28/03/2011 21:56

ha ha, my mum's friend wanted to call her baby Flora but she had already called her kitten Flora so she had to change the cat's name.

my ds2 has the same name as my first doll.

it doesn't matter.

Well thanks for your posts everyone. Looks like I'm worrying unneccesarily.

DS1 (5) is Tom. Funnily, he was one of FOUR Toms at pre-school but now is the only Tom in his reception year. Incidentally, he is just Tom - the others were Thomas shortened to Tom.

No Tommys.

pooka · 28/03/2011 22:19

Reception has 60 children - so 1 Tom in 60. I think there may be one or two at most in the rest of the school (400+ pupils).

expectingno3 · 28/03/2011 22:25

So you didn't put Thomas on his Birth cirtificate and just never use it? I really prefer Tom to Thomas too. I don't really like the whole Tank Engine connection...

I love this thread title.

pooka · 28/03/2011 23:33

Just Tom. I'm not mad keen on Thomas. Not sure why - just fussier than I wanted, and also not a great combo with our surname (three syllables, starts with s) and the longer family middle name we wanted.

Also have a just Joe - similar reasons, not keen on joseph ( too religious) and like Tom, we felt that that shortening was actually a stand-alone name in itself that would suit throughout life.

When I was born my mum phoned my grandma to tell her (she lives in another country), and my Grandma said 'oh, that's my dog's name!'

Italiangreyhound · 29/03/2011 01:21

It doesn't matter at all. Pick the name you like.

PorkChopSter · 29/03/2011 02:57

One of my DC is named after my cat (deceased). Except my dad forgot the cat was deceased, pointed at the cat (living) and very politely said "but, er, won't that be a little confusing?"

CheerfulYank · 29/03/2011 03:02

Tom is a fairly basic name though, and as such probably isn't connected with the hamster. If the name were something more uncommon, like, erm...Alejandro :), then it would be a bit strange.

Hedwig3 · 29/03/2011 09:23

Tom is a great name and I have never known a Tom/Thomas to be known as Tommy.

You could equally say that a dead hamster is stopping you from using the name you want, not great either!

Hassled · 29/03/2011 09:25

Tom isn't a standard hamster name, though, so you're safe. If you'd wanted to call your baby Hammy or Fluffy you might have run into problems.

expectingno3 · 29/03/2011 13:09

These are great replies, thank you! Made me laugh... Seems it is quite common to name our kids after pets then. I won't worry too much. It'll probably be a girl anyway.

My mother named my brother after her cat. An extremely unusual name as well, so it wasn't as if she realised after the fact.

Could have been worse though, the other cat she had was called Fudge.

Elizadoesdolittle · 29/03/2011 16:14

My DD has the same name as one of my deceased Guinea Pigs. I have always loved the name and when my DH suggested it for DD (Guninea Pig had died before we got together) I hesitated for a while but then went for it. My friend texted when she found out DD's name and said "beautiful name, did you name her after the dead guinea pig"?. Did make me laugh. If anything it has taught me to name my animals more carefully and not use names for potential future DC's!

Underachieving · 29/03/2011 17:50

My sister did this. That poor baby is nearly 2 now and i still think of the hamster when I say his name. Have you got long enough until the due date to rethink?
