Matilda/Mattie (even if surname starts with M?)

In my head any future daughter has always has a timeless/classic type name. Like Emily, Lucy, Sophie etc. But I can't get Mattie/Matilda out of my head. Our surname starts with an M so is it too much? Too twee/fairytale?

The other main contender is Holly.

Still....we may be having a boy in which case we're using Finley.

It depends. Is it a 3 syllable surname? Is so I would say no

If it's one or 3 syllables and has no other common sounds like t or d then it might be ok

Holly also very pretty

To my (Irish) ear, first name and surname of the same initial has a very nice ring to it, and it's done quite a bit in Ireland, but I know this is something of a marmite question.

FWIW, I love Matilda/ Mattie (and Tilda).

I have a runaway backspace button -- the exception is a name like Molly or Milly or Mella Mullen, which is too much imo.

I think there's nothing wrong with alliteration. And Matilda is fairly classic. We have lots of Matildas in our family going back many, many years.

Ours is known as Tild or The Tank (the Matilda is an infantry tank and she is built like one).

2 syllable surname.

I wish a name would jump out at me. Its so hard!!

Yes you're right - Matilda is a name that's been around for years. Our first queen was a Matilda wasn't she?
How popular is it in your area? I'm SW and know one 9 year old and that's it.

I prefer Holly to Matilda. However I don't think two "m" names would be a problem.

muminthemiddle · 02/04/2011 13:53

I think it would be ok as Matilda is 3 syllables so is easier on the ear.

Emelene · 02/04/2011 15:51

Matilda's a sweet name.
But my name is Holly, so I would recommend it for sure! I like my name because it's quite pretty, it won't age, and most people know how to spell it! (Most people assume it's with a Y, not an IE ... much nicer that way in my opinion)

Matilda is a fabulous name! And totally fine with an M surname too. But try never to say... "Morning! I'm Mrs M, Matilda M's mother"! You'll feel like a wally!
