Do you mean call him Thomas Edward, or you call him Edward and partner calls him Thomas or Edward????

Confused. Could be timechange... Grin

A couple of my relatives were known by two forenames. It was very confusing for me when I was growing up.

Do you mean in a sort of double barrelled sense or using one if his names part of the time and changing between the two randomly?

I've never come across changing between the two at random but DHs family are all double barrelled and they have a tendency tk use either or which flipping confusing when there's more than one with the same name - but it tends to be the first that's the same so if it's a nuclear family member it'll be the first name Jean or Marie or Pierre and if it's a cousin or something then they use the second to distinguish them from their one of the same name. Except you have situations like Jean-Charles and Charles-Antoine and you can't work out which they're talking about when they say Charles.

So IMO consistently using them together is fine, but chopping and changing is going to confuse everyone else!

Why would you use his second name at school?

I have to say I hate it when students give me a name and then underline one or put another in brackets. I never know what to call them...

i always used to be called by both my names, until i went to school and people just kind of stopped

i don't think it needs to be a problem

My brother used one name at home and another at work - is that the sort of thing you mean? Sometimes it gets confusing but not as often as you would think.

It works ok for one sylable names like John Paul, Mary Claire, etc

but not if it's something like Marc Antony (met a poor DC with this moniker once)

fudgeface · 28/03/2011 10:11

sorry im not being very clear.its just i much prefer his middle name (though his siblings do not) and would prefer for him to be known by his middle name (although he is two).
Margles that is what i mean

We have a few in our family like this.

I thought my mum was going senile when she referred to by grandfather as being called 'X' when he was always called 'Y' be everyone - its even on his gravestone. It wasn't until I was clearing out her house that I found his birth certificate and he was actually called 'XY'.
