Are alliterative names a bad thing?

I have up to now ruled out all names beginning with J because its the first letter of our surname but now I'm thinking that JJ is actually kind of cool...

Or is it the hormones??

Mine is CC. In fact, it's Ca-- Ca---, two syllables for each. I've been told it's cool and also very memorable.

vaginiasmonalogue · 27/03/2011 09:03

I think it's cool. My ds was very nearly Leon LiXXXXXXX.

0891 · 27/03/2011 09:05

I have an alliterative name. No one ever notices, never mind calling me by my initials.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 27/03/2011 09:09

Personally, I don't like it but it does depend on the name. If you are planning on something like J-C Jackson, I'd say no, Juliet Jackson might be ok though.

hogsback · 27/03/2011 09:18

DS is SS, which now I come to think of it isn't great... Damn. Oh well, too late now.

mamadoc · 27/03/2011 13:47

Jonathan Jones?
Jacob Jones? (that's what DD wants to call her prospective little brother)
Julian Jones?

I have a really lovely friend called Juliet Jones and it was partly her that got me thinking that actually there's no reason why not.

Everyone has an opinion on names, make your decision, keep it to yourself and be confident. Asking multiple peoples opinions will merely cloud your judgement

hilltop666 · 27/03/2011 14:56

I don't think theres a thing wrong with it and want to do this myself my surname startes with a C and I want a C or K name.

I have met a few people with our surname and a C name and it has always sounded lovely! So I would say go for it!

Bratfink · 30/03/2011 11:03

I'm a JJ has never been a problem. In fact I quite like it, my name flows nicely

joydivisionovengloves · 30/03/2011 11:40

I have an alliterative name, nobody's ever commented on it!

My DS is OO! (He has a middle name too though) And one 'O' sounds like 'o' (lower case) and one sounds like 'O' (upper case)... So same letter but different sound. Does that make sense..? I think it sounds nice anyway! :)

Elizadoesdolittle · 31/03/2011 14:04

I have one too, became one by marriage! Also nobody has mentioned it (apart from me!). When I was thinking about a name for DD to go with our surname in the end I thought sod it, she'll probably end up married with a surname that doesn't go anyway so it doesn't matter!

RamblingRosa · 31/03/2011 14:07

I love alliterative names. It worked for Marilyn Monroe :)

kiwidreamer · 31/03/2011 15:15

In our case our surname is too harsh and any alliterative names sound just awful so I really think it depends on the names themselves as some of the ones mentioned in this thread are perfectly fine but honestly any christian name starting with D sounds hideous with our D surname.

tammytoby · 31/03/2011 18:39

I was a BB untill I married and loved it, in fact really miss it now Sad.

spiderlight · 31/03/2011 23:21

My son is an RR and it seems to work, although he has a three-syllable first name so the two R sounds are well spaced. I think someone on here mentioned once that it can be an advantage because teachers find alliterative names easier to remember, but I might be misremembering that.

Underachieving · 31/03/2011 23:26

It does depend on the over all feel of the name. Joanna Jenkins is Ok. Anna Anderson isn't. I don't know how to explain, it's subtle.

TruthSweet · 01/04/2011 23:03

DD1 is Lilith Louise but has never been known as LL. Our surname doesn't start with a L though so it's not too bad Wink

rightontime · 03/04/2011 17:09

I know a Thomas Thompson. It amused me for a couple of weeks and then became normal. He does still get comments about it and he is 24 so I think it does depend on the type of name and how much you think the child will get teased because of it and if your family is of the type of personality that would not be bothered by comments.

Go with what you think sounds acceptable. I have a son with an alliterative name and it sounds fine. In fact I didn't even notice to start with.

SilkStalkings · 03/04/2011 20:42

I think initial nicknames are cool.

Eg Beatrice Bond = BB, Cecilia Crane = CC, Kay Crane = KC

Yamba · 03/04/2011 21:34

We have an alliterative name for DS. It sounds very manly and powerful somehow! We just liked the name & didnt think much about alliteration tbh, though I thinkit depends on the names. Overall, I say its cool!

PorcelinaOfTheVastOceans · 03/04/2011 21:48

my names were RR before i took my stepdad's surname, never caused any problems or stuck out. i ruled it out for DD though as it would have been an MM name, and i couldn't get mickey mouse and minnie mouse out of my head!
