General opinions on Tamsin

I keep coming back to this one. Some days I really like it and other days I'm not so sure. I think it's because of the potential nn Tammy which I really don't like. Is it inevitable that she would be Tammy? I can't think of another nn - maybe Tansy (at a push)?

Would like a really girly middle name (but not Elizabeth or an 'Anna' name)

Any thoughts/opinions would be appreciated.

Love it

Pterosaur · 26/03/2011 19:48

I only know one Tamsin, and she is a Tamsin, not anything else, as far as I know.

Tamsin Rebecca?

Greenwing · 26/03/2011 19:53

As Tamsin was originally the nn could you fancy going for the full name - Thomasina or Thomasin like in Hardy's 'Return of the Native' and have Tamsin as the nn?!

I like the name but agree that 'Tammy' is not a good nn. (Also makes me think of Tammy Wynette and I'm not a fan of Country and Western!)
Is Tammy Girl still a clothing shop too?

randomimposter · 26/03/2011 19:53

the only Tamsins I've known have only been called Tamsin, never shortened?

Tamsin Clara/Rosa/Melissa/Eleanor

Underachieving · 26/03/2011 20:01

Lots of Tamsins at my old school, none of whom were ever Tammy.

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 26/03/2011 20:02

I love it. DH really liked it and we seriously considered it.

I wondered if you could use Tansy or Tess as nn.

Valinor · 26/03/2011 20:09

Thanks for the opinions. Not keen on Thomasina or Thomasin Greenwing. They seem a bit too serious IYKWIM?

Never even thought of Tess as a nn thereisalight but I do like it.

I'm liking Tamsin Eleanor from the suggestions so far.

I love Tamsin, and the one I know is called Tam for short.

Firawla · 26/03/2011 22:15

Tamsin is lovely, I don't think you have to go with tammy as a nn. The one I know does not ever go as Tammy, sometimes Tam mainly Tamsin.
Tamsin Eleanor is good

cece · 26/03/2011 22:22

I always get confused between Tamsin and Tasmin so how about Tasmin? Less chance of changing into a Tammy.

Or

Tamara

I love Tamsin, it is on my list, but agree, hate hate hate Tammy.
Am also considering Tasmin which could be shortened to Mina or Minny which I would prefer, but then again nn don't have to happen. Do they?

cece · 26/03/2011 22:23

Oh no not minny - isn't that what some people call a girls privates?!

AllThreeWays · 26/03/2011 23:06

really? am in Oz, don't think we do that here.

grubbalo · 27/03/2011 12:24

I am a variant of Tamsin and my name has never been shortened to Tammy (my mum hates it and so always corrected anyone)! I also have a friend Tamsin who is not Tammy either.

I did get the inevitable Tampax from some people at school so be ready for that - I am of the opinion though that your children will get teased for something, be it their name, hair colour, ears, nose, height - whatever really - and in a way the name thing is easier to put up with than some things!

Like any nickname I think if you make it clear from the outset that you are NOT using it, then you can avoid it.

stegasaurus · 28/03/2011 17:54

My name is pronounced Tamsin but spelt slightly differently. I have never been known as Tammy so it is not inevitable. As a child my mum wouldn't let people shorten my name and I grew up with no wish for them to. I don't like Tammy either.

ValiumSingleton · 28/03/2011 18:55

Sorry, not too keen. It's not dreadful, just a bit blah

Bue · 28/03/2011 19:31

Love Tamsin. Tammy is definitely a worry, but the only Tamsin I know has the nickname Tam, which is miles better IMO.

bigbadbarry · 28/03/2011 19:37

My Tamsin never gets Tammy - it doesn't actually feel like an instinctive shortening. Mostly she just gets Tamsin; we sometimes call her Tams.

Rhubarbgarden · 28/03/2011 19:41

Don't like it, personally.

brightandcheery · 28/03/2011 19:50

Was at school with someone named Tamsin....her nickname (NOT from me) was Tampon. Sorry if I have put you off but some children can be horrible.

oenophilia · 28/03/2011 19:57

We've got one - Cornish roots. Actually it's the whole hog - Tamsin Morwenna. Doesn't get shortened or turned into anything else (yet). There are some who insist on calling her Tasmin, but they're easily corrected.

SooooCynical · 28/03/2011 19:57

Love, love, love Tamzin, spelt with a 'Z' to get the correct pronunciation.
