Hi,

We're expecting our baby girl any day now & are struggling to choose between two names. Surname similar to Mason & will have a third family surname as a middle name so trying to keep middle name short.

Willow Edith

OR

Hazel Jane

Interested to know if you think either are very popular or 'trendy' where you live. My research would seem to suggest not!

Many thanks

I don't know any Hazels where I live (South London), and only know one Willow, and thats very vaugley - a little sister of a girl who attends an after school club with my DD. They're very different names - Willow Edith is quite trendy where as Hazel jane is more traditional.
Just to throw a spanner in the works, what about Edie Jane?!

greedychops · 23/03/2011 13:05

IMO, a Willow would have to be quite graceful, whereas a Hazel could be either graceful or boisterous, and so I prefer Hazel.

greedychops · 23/03/2011 13:06

Sorry - to answer your question, I don't know any of either name here (north of Glasgow).

toobreathless · 23/03/2011 13:08

That's helpful thank you.

Husband does not like 'ie' names sadly and I fear that if we used Edith as a first name it would get shortened to 'Edie'.

I like Hazel, I only know one adult Hazel

Don't know any Willows but it just reminds me of this guy so not keen for a girl tbh

toobreathless · 23/03/2011 13:12

Greedychops, I absolutely agree with regards to willow being 'graceful'. Husband is 6ft4 and a bean pole but I am 5ft 6, so not short and an average size 12. It would concern me that if baby takes after me Willow would not suit. DH thinks I'm being silly about this.

I really like Hazel and think Hazel Edith is lovely if that is an option.

Valinor · 23/03/2011 13:34

I prefer Hazel. I think Willow will date horribly.

I know 2 Willows (aged 18mths and 7). I went to school with a Hazel (early 70's) and DH's grandmother was a Hazel.

emsyj · 23/03/2011 13:35

I went to school with a Hazel (and very nice she was too). Don't know any others and never met a Willow. I'm in the north west.

rirismummy · 23/03/2011 15:26

I love the name Willow and think it would suit all types tbh....it's a very 'natural' name - beautiful :)

Greenwing · 23/03/2011 16:15

I think Willow will date more and it also makes me think of the same (charming but diminutive male) character as MadreInglese.

nickelbabyhatcher · 23/03/2011 16:16

i like both of them.

I would have Edith as the middle name for both, though, rather than Jane.

so

Willow Edith
Hazel Edith

just realised they're both trees! [doh]

ilovesprouts · 23/03/2011 16:17

dont know any willows ,but know an hazel:)

breadandhoney · 23/03/2011 16:20

I don't know any willows and know one hazel in her 30s. i'm in NI.

Hazel Jane is my favourite.

toobreathless · 24/03/2011 15:52

Thank you guys.

We decided last night on Hazel Jane after reading the posts on here.

Hedwig3 I agree Hazel Edith is lovely but Hazel Jane is a nod to a song that DH loves (Hazey Jane) hence the Jane!

sunshinescarlett · 24/03/2011 16:15

I prefer Willow Edith

BelligerentGhoul · 24/03/2011 17:56

My vote goes to Hazel Jane - v cool name.

ValiumSingleton · 24/03/2011 18:09

Hazel Jane
Hazel Edith

Willow is nice but it's a trendy 'coooool' name. And any name that's trendy is going to be UN trendy before too long.

Onion1968 · 25/03/2011 19:43

Hazel Jane

Wafflenose · 25/03/2011 20:15

Lovely! I only know one of each, both in their 30s now. Think Hazel is really nice!
