Jemima is very of-the-moment and will date, if you are worried about that sort of thing. Dulcie is a chambermaid knocked up by the lord of the manor.

Penelope is classic - by far the best of the three.

randomimposter · 21/03/2011 09:08

Jemima by a country mile. Lovely.

CuppaTeaJanice · 21/03/2011 09:15

Penny is ok but Penelope is just awful, along the same lines as Gurtrude and Edna IMO.

Dulcie is ok but it's very feminine and would be hard to pull off if your DD isn't a petite, ballet dancing waft of a girl.

Jemima is the best choice, now that 25 years have passed and the association with the rag doll on Playschool has been forgotten.

I think they're all lovely; slight preference for Jemima or Penelope.

lilibet · 21/03/2011 09:31

Dulcie is beautiful.

(my cat is called Jemima !!)

PepsiPopcorn · 21/03/2011 09:56

Penelope, definitely. Penny for short is lovely too :)

Not keen on the other two.

Jemima is a biblical name.....how can it possibly date? I know several Jemimas - an octogenarian, a friend of my Mum's aged about 65 and a teenager. I don't know any baby Jemimas at present. It does seem popular in the T&T BA's but I think it's pretty timeless. A lovely choice!

Penelope would be my second choice. I dislike the nn's Pen and Penny.

I'm not keen on Dulcie because of the 'Dul' bit.

Hedwig3 · 21/03/2011 10:19

Penelope
Dulcie
Jemima

in that order.

AndOnAndOnAndOn · 21/03/2011 11:13

Jemima, definitely.

Boobz · 21/03/2011 12:14

Penelope without a doubt. Can be Pen, Penny, Nell, Penpots, Penpants (the last of which is what our Penelope gets called a lot these days).

Cool girly name but also sophisticated older name for when they're grown up.

But then I don't want you to use it as I don't want it to become "of the moment"!

stressheaderic · 21/03/2011 12:18

I think they are all terrible and pretentious in the extreme. Sorry.
Maybe it's because I live oop north.

Skinit · 21/03/2011 12:20

Oh I LOVE Dulcie. Very pretty.

happiestblonde · 21/03/2011 12:20

Jemima. It's gorgeous.

CharlieBoo · 21/03/2011 12:21

Jemima by a country mile! Its so pretty and classic... it won't date...its not popular enough IMO.

The other two are ordinary at best...

theagedparent · 21/03/2011 14:54

Dulcie is beautiful

luvviemum · 27/03/2011 20:53

Jemima is a beautiful name - timeless IMO. Not so keen on the others.

ValiumSingleton · 27/03/2011 21:08

wow, beautiful list. I love Dulcie, but I reluctantly agree with a pp that it will date the most.

Jemima is very pretty, but I prefer Penelope by a hair as it is quirkier and stronger. Penelope wins, but that was a tough one.

HoldMeCloserTonyDanza · 28/03/2011 00:17

It might not be an issue for you, but Jemima has an unfortunate racist connotation in the States. We have lived there in the past and might do again, and the negative reaction I got on my American baby board was enough to rule it out. It is a lovely name though.

brightcopperkettles · 28/03/2011 02:40

I like Jemima best, followed by Penelope (nn Nell) then Dulcie.

Agree with Boobz. My DD2 (18) is Penelope (aka Pen, Penny, Penpotts, Pendle etc). It is a fine name to shout across the garden in anger; so many syllables! Grin

(I like Dulcie too. It reminds me of the actress Dulcie Gray; I think it has an elegant, old-fashioned ring (in a good way)).
