Jude or Nathanael

So, have had the boys name Jude for 7 years. Also love Nathanael. Always thought if I had a boy he'd be caled Jude Nathanael. Now, I'm getting a bit scared off by the Jude Law, Jude the Obscure, Hey Jude, Judas, Judy connotations! So wondering if Nathanael Jude would be better. Problem with that is Nate (which I love) rhymes with our surname. What do you reckon?

Cheers

I love them both. Would avoid a rhyming shortened version, though. Also, can I ask why you're choosing that spelling? It's not a conventional one - would usually be Nathaniel.

thisisyesterday · 17/03/2011 18:22

i would choose Nathaniel

Chooster · 17/03/2011 18:28

I've got a 3 month old Jude and love it. It was a last minute choice but I think its a good string name. I like Nathaniel but it probably would be shortened at some point as nate may not be great if it rhymes?

thinkingkindly · 17/03/2011 19:08

Nat could be the nn - Nat Tate is fab!

PepsiPopcorn · 17/03/2011 20:29

I prefer Nathaniel Jude, but would avoid a rhyming nickname. Like thinkingkindly's suggestion of Nat.

I wouldn't be put off by the most of connotations of Jude you've mentioned. Jude is a completely different character in the Bible to Judas, if that helps?

Hedwig3 · 18/03/2011 09:06

His nickname wouldn't have to used with his surname!

tstar · 18/03/2011 12:01

I love both names I have known a Nathaniel and a Jude, The whole hay Jude thing was cute and lovely at first and was never said in a negative way.
I think Jude is a great name for a boy and Nathaniel would make a great second name I have known a Nathaniel and he was a lovely lively boy and grew up to be just as lovely.

Jude Nathaniel................

...............Lovely name!

pilates · 18/03/2011 12:48

I prefer Nathaniel Jude

Edmundo · 18/03/2011 22:14

Nathaniel. I know too many female Judes.

squeak2392 · 19/03/2011 17:22

Nathaniel Jude sounds much better. Nn Nat is good, or you could have Nath (pn like Nathan), or even Niel.
I don't think there's anything wrong with Nate Tate. Okay, when people realise they might sing it a bit, but I can't imagine it would be done in a bad way. I think it's quite fun Smile.

However... I hate the name Jude and once considered Nathaniel myself, so you can take this with a pinch of salt Wink.

ShowOfHands · 19/03/2011 17:26

Nathaniel Jude is nicer I think. And Jude has shot up in popularity if that bothers you at all? Just broken top 100 out of almost nowhere and is becoming quite fashionable for girls too. I know several baby Judes, some boys, some girls.

StableButDeluded · 19/03/2011 17:48

Nathaniel Jude is nice. My Ds was nearly a Nathaniel, but strangely I can't stand the name nathan, so I was put off by the idea people might shorten it to that. And because it's a long name I knew shortenened versions would be inevitable.

Went completely the other way then and chose Adam instead!

nicolamumof3 · 19/03/2011 19:56

Jude definitely

bubbles12 · 19/03/2011 20:31

Nathaniel would be my choice. Also, IMO Jude is a bit girlie.

Also like Adam, as suggested by Stablebutdeluded Smile

freyamalaya · 19/03/2011 23:05

Jude - beautiful name for a boy Smile

shockers · 19/03/2011 23:07

Jude is my most favourite name Smile.

pfishofplight · 20/03/2011 00:06

I would choose Jude.

FriedSpamButty · 20/03/2011 00:30

Nathaniel. Please don't invent a new spelling though!

Rosebud05 · 20/03/2011 13:52

Both great names - you can't go wrong!

allieballiebee · 26/03/2011 08:41

Thanks for all your input. Sorry it's taken so long to reply - got the flu.
Urghhh

Anyway, reason for Nathanael and not Nathaniel is that's -ael is the original Biblical spelling and we're choosing it for religious reasons.

Think I'm back on Jude Nathanael. Just a shame such a lovely names lke Nathanael will get lost as a middle name!
