Are these boys names a bit silly?

My children are called Ellis (boy) and Amelia and I'm currently expecting another boy.

I don't want a name that is too popular, nor considered 'wacky' - and today have come across this name:

Tean (according to a baby naming website, pn 'tee-en' which I assume means Tee-un?)

and also:

Oran (pronounced as it looks - Or-un)

Tean is Cornish according to the website I found it on - and as my familty originate from Cornwall I thought it'd be nice; and Oran is Celtic I think?

Does anyone know if a) these are real names, b) they will be taken as 'silly' seeing as I live in England, and c) they even slightly go with my existing LOs names?

Honest opinions very welcome :)

Oran is Irish - I know quite a few little boys called Oran and I think it's beautiful and strong

A friend had an Oran 2 weeks ago. hadn't heard of it before!

2plus2more · 17/03/2011 20:27

How about swapping the O and the R and having Roan? Nice strong name, unusual, but not totally far out and I think it goes with Ellis & Amelia.

There is a Tean in Staffordshire pronouced Teen.

Like Oran or Orin (know of one) but not keen on Tean.

How about Tiernan?

BikeRunSki · 17/03/2011 20:53

Ragged apart from Ian or Iain....

hilltop666 · 17/03/2011 21:21

Oran is a pretty common name in Ireland although its usually spelt Odhrán so I dont think its weird at all. Not sure about Tean though soz.

UndiscoveredApprentice · 17/03/2011 21:53

Rowan or Kiernan

MarissaMum · 18/03/2011 08:37

Aaron sounds very similar to Oran and is more conventional and I think sounds better with your other kids names.

ragged · 18/03/2011 13:41

You forgot to mention "Eoin", BikRunSki. :)

I've only known one Iain, but heaps of Ians. So I think it's pretty easy to say "Ian, spelled the English way". Easier than explaining every time "No, no, no, I said ORan, not OWen. And you spell it with an A and no, no, no, not an h at the start, either, just the letter O." (etc.)

alasia · 18/03/2011 16:11

Back on the Oran thing again; what if it was spelt Orran (a genuine alternative spelling as far as I can tell) - and possibly pronounced as it's spelt - ok so people may just think I'm calling him Aaron, but as I said before my oh-so-simple surname gets misheard and misspelled, so sometimes I think people can just be a bit erm...dense :/

How about Odin?

MrsMcCave · 19/03/2011 00:54

You really cannot have Oran and Short, sounds like Orange Ort. Although that could just be my nearly 40 weeks worth of baby name obsessing taking over. Grin

MrsMcCave · 19/03/2011 00:56

How about Piran, if you want to go really
Cornish?

bilblio · 19/03/2011 01:08

Tean is one of the Scilly Isles, a small uninhabited one. I'd have put it down as a girls name, but google images brings up both males and female with that name.

EllenJane1 · 19/03/2011 01:26

How about Rowan? I liked it but my DH thought it was too unusual.

UndiscoveredApprentice · 19/03/2011 09:05

Rowan is lovely, not too unusual as it is a real name given to real people for generations, but not at all common.

I love it. Robin is another one with a similar feel to it.

rirismummy · 19/03/2011 10:18

I like Tean BUT my pronounciation of it was 'teen' as in Dean - d-een.

If it was spelt Tian it'd be a lot better as then it's the same pronounciation as Kian - which is a name I absolutely love.

freerangeeggs · 19/03/2011 11:51

Orin and Oren are also real names.

squeak2392 · 19/03/2011 13:21

Tean looks like Tee-un to me. I like it, but it reminds me of Tegan/Teagen, and they're both too feminine in my opinion. I much prefer Tien (Tee-enn), but you might not be comfortable with that, as it's Vietnamese.
I do think it goes with your other children's names though.
Alternatively, Kian is a lovely name.

Oran just reminds me of Oran Berry, which you might not know, but your kids might in the future and their older friends. If Oran looks like orang-utan, then Orran sounds like orange, sorry.
You could try the spelling Auron.
However, I don't think any of them really go with your other names.

Rowan's a nice name, but this spelling is very popular on girls right now, so you'd be better with Roan or Rohan.
