What can Millie be a NN for?

Finally given birth to a beautiful baby girl. After all the indecision she just looks like a Millie. Not keen on Millicent but want a 'proper' name. Any ideas?

Most of the Millies I know are Amelia. I also know an Emilia, but she isn't a Millie.

Alwaysworthchecking · 16/03/2011 12:48

Millie is a good name in it's own right, although the one I know is really Amelia. I've also known one short for Melissa and another short for Amanda. (nn taken from Milly-Molly-Mandy, I think.)

Amelie
Amalie
Emilia
Emelia are variants on the whole Amelia theme.

I've seen Emily also spelled as Emilie and Emilly

If I'd named mine after who they looked like, I'd have had one called E.T. and the other called Phil Mitchell Grin but I take your point!

I think the reason you pick a 'proper' name is so they can have a more 'grown up name' for work and so on.

I can't think of any more names that could be shortened to Millie, but I have one of the ones already suggested and I use that for work and my nickname (not Millie) for friends and family - it's kind of nice to be able to draw a line like that :-)

I like Emily :)

BerryLellow · 16/03/2011 12:56

Romilly is v cute

TractorTrailerCombineBaler · 16/03/2011 12:58

I know an Emily who is Milly for short, I also know an Emilia who is Mimi for short which I also think is lovely. Could also be Amelia, Camille, Camilla as others have suggested.

Milly Molly Mandy was Millicent Margaret Amanda so Amanda had nowt to do with it.

I know a Milan who is Millie ( maybe not surprisingly )

DorisIsAPinkDragon · 16/03/2011 13:19

My dd1 is Milly nn from Emily, but her bf is Millie no other name. (DD's name does get spelt both ways - Millie / Milly by friends etc)

littlemissw · 16/03/2011 13:30

I know an Amanda with nn Millie.

DandyDan · 16/03/2011 13:31

Emilia
Amelia
Camilla
Romilly

I would go for one of the last two.

Has anyone said Amelie? Probably but I'll say it just in case.

I did! Can't believe it wasn't there already when I posted. Such a pretty name.

MrsGruffalo, we've got an Emmeline and have never thought of shortening it to Millie, is Millie usually a NN or Emmeline?

All the Millies I know are either Amelia or just plain old Millie.

Congratulations from me too.

NadiaWadia · 17/03/2011 13:27

Milena or Mila?

Millie is lovely but not a grown-up full name. Needs to be the nickname for something, IMO.

MrsGruffalo · 20/03/2011 20:26

Hi JJJ
I'd just made the jump that as Millie/Milly can be a NN for Emily, and Emmeline is a form of Emily, the NN would still apply
Emmeline is my favourite name in the world and if I have a DD next, she will be Emmeline Claire, NN Millie :)
It might not be an official NN, but we will use it as one :) x

CharlieCoCo · 20/03/2011 20:38

i also love amelie. i have a feeling its going to become really popular soon though so you may have a lot of amelies when you child goes to nursery/school.

Trinaluce · 20/03/2011 21:00

Family member of mine is Millie short for Miriam. DC2 is due on her birthday and we are giving the name serious consideration, even though it's a little 'old' Smile

jellybeans · 20/03/2011 21:10

I would just have Millie. I know 3 who are Millie on the BC. I think it can get a bit confusing if the full name has a different initial to the nn. eg for Amelia Smith, If they are known as Millie; are they actually A Smith or M Smith for example.

EllenJane1 · 20/03/2011 21:19

Millisande as a softer variant of Millicent.

EllenJane1 · 20/03/2011 21:21

Or Melisende
