Come on then highbrow MNers. I need a name that will work in Russian and Greek and here in Blighto for DD due any day now. We have other DCs with these "crossover" names (can't list as terrified will be outed in RL - but lets say for example Nicholas/Alexander/Anna) but surprisingly hard to find acceptable girls names... Inspire me!

You've plenty of choice, but I should point out that girl's names with an 'i' or 'ee' sound at the end should be avoided in Russian ('a' and 'ya' are fine) as 'i', 'ee' is a plural and sounds weird in russian.

I know from bitter experience that the ending will be changed to an 'a' by most Russian people, even if the name is then a stupid word in English (which of course most don't know). So Eleni will be Elena (etc) which is fine, but some names won't be.

Chaotica · 15/03/2011 18:03

'Th' is alien in Russian too... Thea will be Taya etc.

AMourinho · 15/03/2011 18:09

Malinka

thinkingkindly · 15/03/2011 19:16

Malinka is a Russian word but not a name - it means raspberry!

Sophia is a perfect Russian/Greek/English name - shortened to Sonia in Russian, and means wisdom in Greek.

Victoria (nn Vika) might work too.

or

Alexandra (nn Sasha + Shura + Sashka etc)

Anastasia

We know a little greek heritage girl named Vallia (Vallya?sp) - I think it is very pretty.

I agree Sophia probably best for universality

Maria
Marianna
Sophia
Elpida = Nadezhda/Nadia
Christina
Larissa
Anastasia (although i'd purposely spell it Anastassia to avoid mispronounciation)
Eleni / Elena
Olga
Katerina / Ekaterina
Angelina
Georgina / Iorhia (yes, it does exist in Russian, but is very rare)
Efimia (ditto for Russian and is Greek, but not very common in Greek; Russian NN is Fima)
Vera

freshmint · 16/03/2011 21:56

efimia not that uncommon in greek

lots of effis around

I love evgenia but nobody in england would ever pronounce it properly. ditto anastassia

alexpolismum · 17/03/2011 10:40

I like Evgenia too (pronounced more like EvyenEEEa)

My DD is called Ariadne. Works beautifully in Greek and my English family LOVE the name, everyone says how lovely and beautiful it is. I don't know how it would work in Russian, though.

I think Sofia would be a lovely choice, it works in all 3 languages. My dc3 would have been called Sofia if he hadn't turned out to be a boy!

Avoid Pippa. The Greeks find that name very funny.
