Hello, would like your opinions on these names

Lorna for a girl

or

Lorcan for a boy

like Irish/Scottish names as I am of Irish descent and hubby is Scottish.

Middle names - Lorna Grace, Lorna Beth, Lorna Jeane or Lorna Maeve

Lorcan Ross, Lorcan Oisin or Lorcan Alasdair

Thanks for any opinions - other names which fit our criteria also welcome!

Lorna Grace-like.
I don't like Lorcan at all but if it is important to you why not have it second? Alasdair Lorcan?

DesertOrchid · 14/03/2011 18:41

I love Lorna but have been put off slightly by the lack of a meaning. Aside from the Lorna Doone reference, does it have one?

Nightstar · 14/03/2011 18:47

I like them both, actually! Good choice

spiritfingers · 14/03/2011 18:55

Thanks for the opinions ladies. They are appreciated.

As for meanings, yes it does seem t have been "invented" for the novel, however it is apparently widely regarded as the feminine of Lorne which is considered sort of a scottish form of Lawrence, and is after the Firth of Lorne - which is a lovely place. So I suppose we could take meaning from that?!

Really like both. But oh how I love the name Oisin.

alexaj · 14/03/2011 19:27

Lorcan sounds like he should be an evil vampire or something. Dislike.
Lorna's OK though.

pointydog · 14/03/2011 19:30

I like Lorna

Don;t like Lorcan one bit. Orc. Or is it ork? Thousands and thousands of orcses.

Lorn is good for a scottish boy

Rhubarbgarden · 14/03/2011 19:30

I love Lorna

smashingtime · 14/03/2011 19:52

I love Lorna - still quite unusual. Like Lorna Grace from your choices - very pretty!

I do like Lorcan and also Lachlan with nn Lachy

spiritfingers · 14/03/2011 19:55

oh love Lachlan smashingtime, that is going on our list for sure!

Hubby now says he think Lorna might be a bit "middle aged." Whatever that means. I think as you said, it is quite unusual and not middle-aged mumsy at all. Hmm. what do you think?

weegiemum · 14/03/2011 19:56

Like Lorna. Like Morna more more though - means "beloved" and is dd1's middle name!

Have little opinionon Lorcan. Prefer Lachlann, or Logan.

FlingonTheValiant · 14/03/2011 19:58

I really like Lorna. I had Lorcan on my list, but DH wasn't keen.

Piffpaffpoff · 14/03/2011 20:01

Love Lorna. Its not v popular which can only be good in my book!

NotAnotherNewNappy · 14/03/2011 20:53

I really like Lorna and Lorcan - lovely sounds, esp with an irish or scottish accent, and both unusual but not batty.

expectingno3 · 14/03/2011 20:54

I don't really like like Lorna, but Lorcan is fab - I know one and he's a lovely little boy. I predict spelling issues with Lachlann.

seeker · 14/03/2011 20:56

Have you considered Laura, rather than Lorna?

And Lorne for a boy, rather than Lorcan?

Mumcentreplus · 14/03/2011 21:15

Lorna - bit boring ..prefer Lauren

Lorcan - reminds me of Lycan

both ok..but nothing to write home about imo

Onion1968 · 14/03/2011 21:34

Lorna is not middle aged, it is lovely. Like it with Grace as middle name.
Not sure about Lorcan at all.

PepsiPopcorn · 14/03/2011 22:41

I like both. Would go for Lorna Grace or Lorna Beth, or Lorcan Alasdair or Lorcan Ross.

suzikettles · 14/03/2011 22:51

I really like Lorna. I know of quite a few my age (30s) but no wee ones. Only 5 babies were called Lorna in Scotland last year (I do love the Scottish babies' names lists Blush)

No real opinion about Lorcan, but I like Lachlan.

birdofthenorth · 14/03/2011 22:53

Love Lorcan & all your mns to go with it! Less keen on Lorna but again like your middle name options

suzikettles · 14/03/2011 22:55

43 Lachlans (and 17 Lauchans), 2 Lorcans btw

I was a bit surprised that no baby boys were named Lorne, but then I remembered the popularity of Lorne sausage... might work better out of Scotland.

meala · 14/03/2011 23:15

Love Lorna Jeane, so pretty.

Also love Lachlan (but I have one so am a bit biased) Grin

Not sure about Lorcan, don't dislike it though. I think it's a name that could grow on you. Nick name could be Lory.
