Nigerian names

Noddyrocks · 13/03/2011 18:27

I am English and my Husband is English-Nigerian

We already have one DD and I thought it was fair that she have an English first name if the middle and last Nigerian names. So that worked out ok.
But OH wants the next one coming up to have a first Nigerian name as well. I have looked a littl into Nigerian names but not really seen any I like.
I quite like Tobi for a boy I guess.

Any other ideas on Nigerian names please for boys and girls. (our first daughter's middle name is Eniola)Yuroba

My friends kids are Remy and Sade. Very pretty. Toisin is nice too (not sure If I spelt it right!)

SilkStalkings · 16/03/2011 19:22

Fela for a boy? As in Fela Kuti (more ideas on that link too.)

SilkStalkings · 16/03/2011 19:30

Or Kora for a girl after the beautiful West African instument?

Noddyrocks · 16/03/2011 20:30

Some kora playing on 'Birds' here.

My son who is mixed race has an English first name and Nigerian middle name - Eni (pronounced Ayni) meaning number one. If we had had a girl she would have had Sade as her middle name, short for Folasade which I believe is Yoruban.

MissEleto · 17/03/2011 10:44

Taiye is a nice yoruba name :)

SoupDragon · 17/03/2011 10:48

I worked with a woman who, IIRC, was of Nigerian descent called Chika.

squeak2392 · 19/03/2011 21:03

I know an Oluwaseun. He says no one can pronounce it though, so he just goes by Seun :P
Also, I've just looked it up and apparently it's unisex.

MrsSchadenfreude · 19/03/2011 21:28

A lot of Nigerian names are unisex - Taiwo and Kehinde for twins (one meets "Greet the World" and the other means "Bring up the Rear" (!) I was told.

Babatunde for a boy (named for the grandfather), Folasade for a girl - can't remember what it means, shortens to Sade, like the singer. Adetokunbo (Ade or Toks for short), means "born overseas" I had a friend called Opeoluwa (Ope for short) which she said meant "Thanks be to God for bringing us this child."

There are some fabulous Igbo girls names - I know a Nnenna, Ngozi and Nneka. Also Adaoma (can be spellled Adamma) and Ashirima.

MrsSchadenfreude · 19/03/2011 21:29

Temitope and Toyin are also nice. I had a friend who called her daughter Titilola, Lola for short.

Giselle99 · 28/03/2011 09:10

Taiye can only be used for a twin. It's the same as Taiwo.

Yoruba names I like:

Tosin
Teniola
Sola
Seyi
Jade (pronounced Jah-Day)
Feyi
Yeni
Niyi
Akin
Lolade
Lola
Femi
Rotimi
Nike (but everyone will pronounce it Nai-Kee; it's pronounced Nee-Care)
Adeola
Tomi
Dayo
Yetunde
Aina (pronounced Ai-Nor)
Jolade
Toyin

phonix · 28/03/2011 13:38

One of my friend's little girl's name is Jadesola, apparently it's a very rare name even in Nigeria. They shorten it to Jade (NOT as in Ms Goody, but J-ah-dé with an accent on the 'e'). She also has a son, but forgot his name, will try and look it up for you.

phonix · 28/03/2011 13:51

Back again...I remembered my friend's son's nickname - Femi, but forgot what it's short for, and I have no means of asking her right now...Sad

Anyway, both her children's names are definitely Yoruba.

BikeRunSki · 28/03/2011 14:03

I met a Nigerian lady on holiday last year called Ayo (pronounced I-O), which i thought was a lovely name.
