I am trying to find a name I love and keep changing my mind on a daily basis. I don't want one that's too popular. I really love Imogen at the moment. Would this name get shortened by people to anything?

Imo
Immie
Ginny
(G)Jenny
Midge
Mog

and thatis, of course, entirely separate form any family nicknames that might arise Grin

PepsiPopcorn · 11/03/2011 11:01

The nicknames that an Imogen could have are quite awkward so I think most people would just use Imogen. Probably Im or Immy if anything.

ttalloo · 11/03/2011 11:05

Imodium

silverfrog · 11/03/2011 11:07

I think you underestimate people's desire to shorten a name, Pepsi Grin

my dd has been called all of the ones I listed at one time or another - all by people outside the family! her nickname at home is completely different...

theagedparent · 11/03/2011 11:11

I know an Imogen who gets called Moo

I love the name Imogen.

I have known two, nn Immie/Imm and Jenny/Jen. I like the nicknames too.

yomellamoHelly · 11/03/2011 11:25

Know an Imogen who is and always has been Imogen! I would shorten it to G/Jenny or G/Jen if it were the name of my little girl.

RibenaBerry · 11/03/2011 12:36

I know an Imogen, sometimes called Ginny, but generally only by family and close friends, plus occassionally (rather than routinely) by others. It's not quite like the automatic desire of everyone to shorten Benjamin to Ben or whatever.

dancemum · 11/03/2011 15:26

I know one 4 year old Imogen, and about 4 teenage ones who are friends of my dcs. I think it's a lovely name. Little girl Imogen is not shortened by anyone really altough her mum calls her Immy, most other people just refer to her by her full name.

The teenage girls are Imo, Immy, Imz to friends and family and even friend's parents, sports coaches etc but mostly just Imogen for the majority of the time and in any sort of formal or school setting. Apart from Imo who is Imo for most of the time.

JintyMcGinty · 11/03/2011 15:33

I know an Imogen who gets called Immy, which grates a bit on me TBH. I don't think Imogen shortens to anything naturally and Imogen is a pretty name in its own right and I would use it without feeling any urge to shorten it, but her parents are insisting on "Immy".

movingsoon · 11/03/2011 16:30

I friend has a Imogen. When she was small on she has been imo or immy but most of the time she is Imogen.

whysolate · 11/03/2011 16:38

My DD is Imogen. I love, love, love her name. I have an annoying habit of lengthening names rather than shortening them.

She gets called Immy-Jimmy-JammerBlushby me and her dad.

Her brothers sometimes call her Imz.

bluesatinsash · 11/03/2011 16:41

Imogen is a lovely name and was my choice if I'd had a DD (had a DS2 instead Smile).

NN wise I don't think anyone would shorten it unless you referred to her as Ginny or Immie. Once she gets to school is a whole other matter as its almost compulsory to hand out nicknames and that's when you become known as the only person to refer to her by her Sunday name Grin.

I have a Benjamin and already know I'll be the only one still referring to him as that once he reaches school age!

Raahh · 11/03/2011 16:45

DD's middle name is Imogen, so we don't use it that often to shorten it. Had it been her first name, I wanted to call her ImpBlush.

Short forms and nick names are two different things, ime. DD1 is Millicent, shortened to Millie, but her nick names are anything from Moo to Stroppy knickers!!

Lizzywishes · 11/03/2011 16:50

There's an Imogen in my clas (year7) and the others call her Immie or Imogen -about half and half. Teenagers generally like shortened names, makes no difference what their parents think!

weimy · 11/03/2011 16:52

one I teach is called imo by friends

meditrina · 11/03/2011 16:58

Imogen seems to have completely displaced the Isabel group of names round here.

Immie seems to be the most frequent nn, also Imo.

I have a little Imogen. Everyone calls her Imogen, except for close family and friends. To us she is Squidgy, Idqey, Squidge or Idge. It suits her as she is a squidgy, cuddly sort of girl with mad hair and a cheeky streak a mile wide.

JessieEssex · 12/03/2011 11:44

I have a 7mo Imogen and she's Immy or Im most of the time. Think Imo sounds a bit jolly hockeysticks. Love Imogen as a full name though, so we're not desperate to shorten it, it just happens organically really.

CountBapula · 12/03/2011 11:56

The character in the book and film Fried Green Tomatoes was called Idgie as a NN for Imogen.

Abcinthia · 12/03/2011 14:28

My DD is called Imogen and I mainly call her Imo or Immy or sometimes she is Immy-Nimmy-Moo-Moo though Grin

Cortina · 12/03/2011 14:46

Son's friend is called Mimi - by the school too. Quite like.

eurycantha · 12/03/2011 18:53
