Lovely name nd not popular as far as I am aware.

GollyHolightly · 09/03/2011 13:53

Very lovely indeed.

Indith · 09/03/2011 13:56

Lovely :)

DontWorryBaby · 09/03/2011 13:58

I love the name Iona and knew a very nice Iona as well - have only ever come across it once.

Just be careful if your surname is something like Carr. Smile

Hedwig3 · 09/03/2011 13:58

Lovely as it is such a lovely place, I have always liked it.

TheMadHouse1234 · 09/03/2011 14:02

DontWorryBaby - this was my concern! Although I think it goes well with my surname, I do worry that it will get teased at school...I own a.....

Yuck.

Sorry.

squeaver · 09/03/2011 14:03

Getting more popular in Scotland I think. I think it's lovely, very feminine

MadreInglese · 09/03/2011 14:06

I know an adult Iona, how would you pronounce it? She is "Yona" but I have heard it as "Eye-owna"

PepsiPopcorn · 09/03/2011 14:20

Lovely name :) I prefer it to Isla which is very popular ATM.

squeaver · 09/03/2011 15:02

Eye-owna

MavisEnderby · 09/03/2011 15:04

pretty

Underachieving · 09/03/2011 15:50

MadreInglese I think the most usual pronounciation is as you gave it, very similar to "I own a". I've not heard of anyone calling an Iona "Yona" before.

It's a lovely name OP, as long as you don't have a surname or middle name which is also a noun it'll be fine. So Iona Violet Carr might be a bad idea, but Iona Jane Robinson would be fine. It would be sad if the "I own a" thing put you off unnecessarily because it's beautiful.

MadreInglese · 09/03/2011 15:53

The "Yona" I know is named after an icelandic relative IIRC

Pronouced eye-owna is prettier I think

Underachieving · 09/03/2011 15:56

Ah that explains it, foreign origins.

midori1999 · 09/03/2011 16:06

I like it, but I do think it's quite 'hard' and not feminine.

5DollarShake · 09/03/2011 18:49

Beautiful name, simple and (I think) feminine and strong. Not overly popular.

Grabaspoon · 09/03/2011 18:54

I know a baby Iona - think it's a lovely name :)

DilysPrice · 09/03/2011 18:56

Great.
Hidden advantage is that she will be very proud to be the first child in nursery to be able to write her name.

PorkChopSter · 09/03/2011 18:57

The Yona pronunciation is also Welsh, I believe.

Anonymousbird · 09/03/2011 18:59

I adore it, one of my favourites.
Sadly not having any more children!

But have a lovely friend with that name, so next best thing!

pointydog · 09/03/2011 18:59

I like it. Beautiful island. I think I like it because I know the island.

eileenslightlytotheleft · 09/03/2011 19:02

Gorgeous name. A friend called her DD this several years ago but I have never met anyone else with the name.

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 09/03/2011 19:02

What 5dollar said.

It's lovely.

moogdroog · 12/03/2011 12:14

If it's Welsh it's definitely Yo-na, much the same as Yo-an (Ioan) for a boy.
A friend's mum is called that (the mum is horrible, but don't let that put you off) - I'm sure it comes from January (Ionawr).
