Name dilemma!!!

So i was all set on calling my new baby daughter, Skyla, untill i found out today that her name means what you'd call a female dog in Greek.
Think im back to square one now...
My other half said we should still stick with the name, as were not greek and we don't live in Greece, so it shouldn't really make a difference to us and the name is quite popular in the States, but i just don't know now... This whole baby naming is driving me slightly nuts now!!
I already have a daughter and son and we have always agreed that if we had another girl that we would call her Skyla and if a boy, Jayden.
I really don't like any other girls names and if i do, i don't want to use them as i already know friends and family who have that name or who have called there kids the names.
Would it be really mean to call my baby Skyla, when it means such a bad name in another language??

as per the other thread, don't like Skyla, sounds like a car but it's your baby.

well, put the R back on the end and maybe it'll be ok?
Skylar.

BooBooGlass · 07/03/2011 21:02

Honestly? Since you're asking for opinions I assume you're OK with hearign the good and the bad. Skyla and Jayden are not the best names. I hesitate to use the C word, but I'm afraid I would make a judgement about those children before meeting them. Which maybe says more about me than anything, but there you go. There are so many beautiful names you could give a child. These are not two of them imo.

The word for female dog in Greek is pronounced SKEE la not SKY la. The Greek 'Y' is one 'ee' sound of many. There would be no confusion, so if you like it, use it. I think it's pretty.

You were also thinking of Skye, weren't you? That's a very pretty name :)

sum04 · 07/03/2011 21:29

BooBooGlass Yes, Jayden may be seen as 'chavvy', but im certainly not a chav :)
I have a Summer and Dylan already, not sure if you would class their names as 'chavvy', but i don't personally look at a name and put it into a class, if i like it, then that's all that matters...
I personally can't understand people who make judgements on people by there name and age?? I really like it, but im just a little worried about what her name means, but byronicheroine's comment has left me feeling abit more positive now.x

Of course people make judgements, they cannot help it! Which of these two do you imagine would be a high court judge:

Chelsea Jay or Catherine Elizabeth??

one name conjours up the judge, the other would be a nail technician.

sum04 · 07/03/2011 21:41

Yes im sure people make judgements, its just personally i don't and can't understand why people do. Anyways... :)

Chelsea Jay would be the judge.

As the pronunciation is different in Greek and you have no connectin to the country I think Skyla/Skylar will be fine.

Ok, so it's perceived as chavvy, but Summer, Dylan and Skyla are far from the most chavvy names I've ever heard. I would say the good advice for naming is listen to the criticism because you want to know in advance what people think, but having heard it all then if you want to go with it do. It's your baby.

muminthemiddle · 07/03/2011 23:28

If you like it then use it. FWIW the only Skyla I know is far from chavvy her mum is anything but, stuck up yes, chavvy NO.

I really like the name Skyla! Even tho the reason I ended up on this thread is because I'm getting a female puppy next month and this is the name I chose for her. My son is called Mckenzie and I never heard of any other person called that until I had my son. Then all of a sudden everyone loved the name and started callin girls and boys Mckenzie just with a little difference in the spelling. I think its a very pretty name and like I said even though I have chose this name for a puppy I think its a wonderful name for a child and its really different. I know a lot of people who have children named certain names and you hear or dogs being named the same thing. Its all about what name you like so if you like it go for it! Hardly any body liked the name Mckenzie and now they all love it! You will find the same thing will happen as your child gets older :)
