but dh has said he will insist on the nn Kate/Katie. I hate both of those (neg connotations from people I've known). Would it be ridic to christen her Catherine, and only have her father (and her father's family obv) call her Kate/ie. Knowing my luck, that would stick and I don't like it.

We can't agree on any other names

DD is also Catherine (family name for generations, but primarily we both liked it); we thought probably Kit or Kat as nn, but no, she's always Catherine, never shortened...

you and dh disagree; back to the drawing board.

My Mum is Katharine

Dad calls her Kate

Her siblings call her Kathleen

Dad's siblings call her Kathy

DS started calling her Granny Katie and the other GCs followed suit

I've actually got no idea what she calls herself as I've always called her "Mum" Confused

No matter what you call her, other people will always come up with a variation

Actually if you get in first with a nickname it will stick Wink

DH chose DDs name as I had first dibs on DS'; so I shortened it to a name I prefer and it has stuck and now DD refers to herself as Lizzie instead of Elizabeth

I think Katherine tends to be shortened to Kate more than Catherine. I'm a Catherine and have never been anything else!
