How common is Bella?

I know Isabella is really, really popular and would definitely steer clear, but I do love Bella. Would probably go Arabella as full name, but Bella for everyday use. Is it now boringly common, particularly after Twilight?

How common is she?

Don't tell her I said this, but I've hears she's a right slaaaaag.

Sorry. Grin

It's not popular on its own but as a nn for Isabella probably reasonably well used. Not stupidly common though. I know more shortened to Izzy.

I like. Arabella is lovely.

Twilight connection is the only thing that would put me off. Only because Bella Swan is such a ubiquitous, lacklustre, mediocre character who zzzzzzz......

MamaLazarou · 04/03/2011 11:58

Not as common as Milo - he's always dropping his aitches.

meditrina · 04/03/2011 11:58

It exploded in popularity in about 2007, but I think it's falling back a bit now. So there would be oodles slightly older. I think the Twilight association is unlikely to endure.

Hedwig3 · 04/03/2011 12:08

I much prefer Arabella to Isabella.

If Bella explodes in popularity and it bugs you, her name would still be Arabella anyway.

So as long as you use Arabella some of the time you can then choose to use it more and use Bella less.

I know an adult Arabella and an 11 year old Bella

meditrina · 04/03/2011 12:10

I meant Isabella for the 2007 explosion. And quite a lot of them are Bella day to day.

I know one child Bella aged 18 months.

dan1981 · 04/03/2011 13:09

I love Arabella and would have it myself if only it went with my surname(i thought of trying to use arabelle instead at this was ok with my surname but its just not as nice).

all the isabelle's and isabella's i know are Izzy's not bella's so i don't think bella is overly popular

good name choice - i love it

PepsiPopcorn · 04/03/2011 14:30

Isabella is very popular ATM but I don't know of any little Arabellas. Both are very pretty names. I like the idea of a longer name with Bella for short.

blueberrymoon · 04/03/2011 14:42

I don't know of any Bella's and I like it a lot. How is Arabella pronounced...? Is it Aira or Ara at the beginning?

blueberrymoon · 04/03/2011 14:43

Ooops Bellas not Bella's :)

Pinkjenny · 04/03/2011 14:43

I very much like Bella but couldn't quite lose the Tweenies connection. Had the same problem with the name Milo.

jumpinghoops · 04/03/2011 22:31

In almost all baby groups I go to there is more than one Bella. The most popular girls name around these streets for sure (North London).

Tortoise · 04/03/2011 22:32

I know of one teen Bella but hers is short for Belladonna.

smother · 04/03/2011 22:55

as muck.
(only joking, it's a lovely name!)

NotJustKangaskhan · 05/03/2011 00:21

It's meant to be very popular, but the only "Belle" named child I know is a Mirabelle (who mostly goes by Mira).

ValiumSingleton · 05/03/2011 10:39

I don't know any, but I do know a fair few Isabellas. THey are all either Izzy or just Isabella in full.

Belladonna is lovely but it is a type of poison isn't it? And 'beautiful lady' can't possibly be a name in Italy can it?! I do like it though! I also like Rubella and I'm annoyed it's a virus not a name.

ValiumSingleton · 05/03/2011 10:42

OP, what about Belinda? I love it. I picture a popular and sporty and Australian girl going hill climbing on her one day off a week. I think Belinda and other 'da' names might be due a mini revival soon. (Zelda is lovely too). imo!!

meditrina · 05/03/2011 10:44

I actually like Bellatrix as a name (no, I didn't use it, but still sometimes wish I had).

purepurple · 05/03/2011 10:45

I know one Bella who is a baby, and a couple of Isabellas. I love Arabella, and don't know any.

mpsw · 05/03/2011 12:16

It's also Latin for "of the war" - so could suit girls of many types of temperament.
