Liberty, will it travel?

Hi every-one, In four weeks or so I'll be having a baby girl. We are down to three "finalists" for her name. One of these names is Liberty. Here in Australia it is an unusual choice but isn't considered too way out but we do plan on spending an extented time in the U.K. soon. Do you think that people in the U.K. will associate Liberty with the store and think that it is a tad pretentious? I'd welcome any honest feedback. Our other top choices are Lucinda or Clementine.

Liberty isn't that great really, the store won't be the first thing in people's minds but it does seem a bit pretentious. Think Lucinda or Clementine better...sorry

muttimalzwei · 03/03/2011 07:18

Or Libby?

booandbump · 03/03/2011 07:20

My first thought was Liberty Bell. I love Lucinda and Libby is a lovely nn for Elizabeth.

bebemooneedsabreak · 03/03/2011 07:23

I'm American living n the UK and I don't know of the store you're talking about...I actually rather like the name. Shortening it to Libby is darling!! (I think Lucinda and Clementine are rather pretentious sounding, tho the idea of being able to sing 'Oh my darling Clementine' to my baby makes me smile)

3rdnparty · 03/03/2011 07:27

I think Liberty is great though aften shortened here to Libby (UK) but can be seen as pretentious not sure why also wouldn't think of the shop....more American for some reason

  • Clementine lovely also often shortened to Clem
  • Lucinda would be seen as a posh/horsey type name and shortened to Luce ...hthSmile

I like the name Liberty (and know a nice one at primary school).

I don't like Clementine (the song, again).

Lucinda is lovely (great name, and I associate with Prior-Palmer).

ilovemydogandMrObama · 03/03/2011 07:29

Not sure what being American has to do with Liberty the store Hmm. It's on Regent Street in London.

bebemooneedsabreak · 03/03/2011 07:32

I still don't know of it...so I have no associations with the name and that store (i.e. I was clarifying my particular position)...Sort of like would you have any idea if I asked if you thought the name Kohls would just remind you of the store...

COCKadoodledooo · 03/03/2011 07:43

I love it as a name, and would have had a Libby had I had a girl. As long as your surname isn't Bell Wink

DerangedSibyl · 03/03/2011 07:55

I've never heard of a store called Liberty, and I think that nobody else will have either. I prefer it to Luciner and Clemantine

SuiGeneris · 03/03/2011 08:15

Liberty is the brand name for sanitary towels in some European countries- not the UK though, so you might not care

iskra · 03/03/2011 09:59

Well, Liberty is a nice shop.

meditrina · 03/03/2011 10:02

Liberty's, for anyone who doesn't know it. Lovely shop!

RamblingRosa · 03/03/2011 10:07

I think Liberty is a beautiful name. And a good shop so at least it doesn't have negative associations!

Much much nicer than Clementine or Lucinda IMO.

And I think you'll find it's similar to the situation in Australia in that it's unusual but not crazy/weird/out there.

hesterstanhope · 04/03/2011 03:30

Thanks every-one, seems like the verdict is that Liberty is in a different category to the baby Chanels, Guccis and Diors!

Clmentine is lovley, Liberty is in the same camp as Trinity to me (DH decided that would be a good name for our DD)

Bucharest · 04/03/2011 10:10

I don't think it's that different to Chanel and Gucci tbh.

Lucinda and Clementine are a million times classier.

Trinaluce · 04/03/2011 11:21

Liberty's lovely - not like you're wanting to call your daughter Ann when your surname is Summers ;)

EdieB · 04/03/2011 11:46

I have a Liberty and lots of people comment on what a lovely name it is. Not v. popular around here and she is the only one in her school ( although have heard of another locally). Gets shortened to Libby a lot which she also likes. Ironically, we were thinking of moving to Oz and when we went on a reccie there I was a bit concerned that there was a petrol station chain in SA called Liberty! I would not consider it a pretentious name ( but am obv biased!) If you like it go for it!

highlystrung · 08/03/2011 11:56

Think Liberty is a lovely name
