What teasing will a boy called Lawrence or Hugh get?

Really struggling with boys names. These are two possibilities. Tell me the bad things associated with them that we might have missed?

(BTW, Hugo doesn't work with surname. Lawrence sp rather than Laurence as has some meaning to us, and more likely to be spelt like this here)

depends where you live. We have a Fabian and a Rafe (Raphael) who are fine here in middleclassville, but would be ripped to shreads elsewhere

Hassled · 02/03/2011 21:10

I think a Hugh might suffer. But Lawrence seems fine to me - I know a very cool 8 year old Lawrence. Lawrence doesn't have the same "posho" connotations as Hugh, I don't think.

candleshoe · 02/03/2011 21:12

My uncle Hugh has always been called Huge by everyone incl. schoolfriends, wife and his cheeky niece (me)!

Lawrences are often known as Laurie therefore Lorry associations maybe?

KazBarTFG · 02/03/2011 21:13

Where I come from people called Hugh get called Shug...not a good look :)

Lawrence is lovely though.

sharbie · 02/03/2011 21:14

my ds is lawrence - used to get called croissant Smile now lol.

JamaicaGeisha · 02/03/2011 21:17

I know two Lawrences from very different backgrounds. No teasing at all.

thenightsky · 02/03/2011 21:18

DS is a Lawrence. He has made it to 18 without any teasing. He does get called Lol by his mates though.

meditrina · 02/03/2011 21:19

Unless you happen to use the idiom "talking to Hughie and Ralph on the great White telephone" (sometimes just shortened to a dramatic "Hugheeeee"), then you're probably OK. Unless your surname is Janus.

Grin medi

I teach a Lawrence - I work in a mixed ability state school, he is about as far from posh as you can get. only year 8 now, but you can tell as he gets older, he will be one of the "hard" kids and won't stand for any name calling - nobody would dare!!

Takver · 02/03/2011 21:32

Both a Huw and a Lawrence in dd's school, never heard any comments on either, though of course Huw is a very classic Welsh name, so perhaps different here.

missnevermind · 02/03/2011 22:15

One of my best friends growing up was Laurence. Haven't heard the name since. Love it. We sometimes called him Loz or Lorry.

pumpkinpoppet · 02/03/2011 22:22

My Dad was Hugh and he hated it because through-out school he got called Hughie, Pooey, Phewie, (and variations). So he chose to go by his surname his whole life (which works as a first name). As an adult he wouldn't have cared, but obviously the name calling got a bit tired.

Having said that, it might be a touch more mainstream now. My Dad wasn't at all posh!

Trinaluce · 02/03/2011 22:57

Lawrence is one of the few boy's names I like - I adore it Smile

sharbie · 02/03/2011 23:07

it just epitomises naughty cheeky toddler to me

Margles · 02/03/2011 23:28

My Dad was a Laurence - he never had any problems apart from people spelling him as Lawrence. I was going to use it as a second name for DC but she turned out to be a girl, so that didn't happen.

Thanks for all the replies. One more off the list...:)
