What do you think of Atticus as a middle name?

I think we have decided on Finn as a boy's name (still working on a girl!) and I like Atticus for a middle name. I admit, it is mostly as I love 'To Kill a Mockingbird' and just saw it was 50th anniversary and the name came to me. I know it's a bit unusual so wondered what you all thought?
Any suggestions for a girl if we like the name Finn for a boy? Was thinking of Nell but see that most people didn't like that on another post and hadn't thought about it rhyming with smell!!

What does 'pretentious' mean - different, rare, unusual,...Confused?

I genuinely like the name Atticus and think it sounds lovely and elegant (and no, I don't have one Smile), but I don't get the pretentious comment.

PepsiPopcorn · 01/03/2011 19:19

Pretentious? It means ostentatious, showy, extravagant, claiming undeserved importance.

FoxyRevenger · 01/03/2011 19:24

I like it as a name, but it does have a bit of 'oh aren't we well read' pedigree, however it's a middle name, so go for it if you like, most people won't know/care what it is.

NinkyNonker · 01/03/2011 20:42

I like it.

mayanna123 · 01/03/2011 21:21

I like Atticus. Just shows what different tastes we all (luckily) have - what some find pretentious others find beautiful. I'm not keen on Finn or the combination Finn Atticus.

birdofthenorth · 01/03/2011 23:25

Finley Atticus sounds great... unfortunately Finn Atticus sounds like "fanatics" in my mind!

RedbinD · 01/03/2011 23:29

Finley Atticus - Great
F.Atticus - might need a bit of thought.

mayanna123 · 02/03/2011 09:23

Fatticus Grin

Janus · 02/03/2011 19:12

OH GOD, FATTICUS!!!
Hector Atticus, is that any better? I'm clutching at straws I think!
To be honest, who really uses middle names? ie I know it may come across a little pretentious but I only know the middle names of my immediate family and very best friends. In a way I feel like it is a little way of indulging yourself with a name that you like but maybe not brave enough to use as first name! Does that make sense?!

Hector Atticus is nice. You might get Hatticus of course, not as bad as Fatticus though!

BelligerentGhoul · 02/03/2011 19:47

Loving Hector Atticus. Still like Gideon Atticus better though! Wink

SeeJaneKick · 02/03/2011 19:51

Fin Atticus...it sounds like an exclamation! Oooh that's so finaticus!

Sorry no

MirandaGoshawk · 02/03/2011 19:52

Hecto - ratticus? Can't have the first name ending in r, imo.

RandomChocolate · 03/03/2011 19:36

I love Atticus and had my heart set on it for DS but DH absolutely vetoed it Sad

starterfor10 · 03/03/2011 19:48

I like Atticus, and like the book.

tammytoby · 03/03/2011 21:26

Why don't you use Atticus as a first name?

I think Atticus is a fabulous name. Not common but not too way out there either. I love it and may pinch it for any possible future DS, dependent ofcourse on talking DH round to the idea. Not keen on Finn, But Finlay sounds ok.

starterfor10 · 04/03/2011 17:02

Does depend on where you live.In some areas Atticus would be admired- in others he would stand out like a sore thumb. Also what kind of school would he be likely to attend? My family vetoed Benedict because they said if my DS went to the local comp they'd make mincemeat of him. In the event he didn't and there is a Benedict in his year, but it is worth thinking long term.

Allatsea1 · 05/03/2011 22:34

Is it only me that thinks atticus is pretentious?

PepsiPopcorn · 05/03/2011 22:55

Allatsea1 No it isn't. There do seem to be a fair few Atticus threads these days, don't there?

Allatsea1 · 06/03/2011 09:35

It might just be where we live 'Oop North' but Atticus would have a fair few people making snide remarks. If you like it though, go for it. I care far too much about what other people think.
