I see that Kirstie Allsopp has a son called Bay.

I am looking for an unusual boys name and this caught my eye.

What do you think of it? I can't see it on any name sites, did she make it up?

Can be short for Bailey.

Bay means "reddish-brown", as in a bay horse.

Personally, I like it.

PepsiPopcorn · 01/03/2011 10:25

I quite like it.

PepsiPopcorn · 01/03/2011 10:25

(I assumed it was something to do with bay trees!)

mrsravelstein · 01/03/2011 10:26

i like it too

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 01/03/2011 11:35

I know a little girl named Bay. I think it's rather nice.

MamaLazarou · 01/03/2011 14:38

People may think you copied Kirstie. This may not bother you, though!

DELHI · 01/03/2011 14:39

Sounds very American to me, like one of those names that's just a word - not convinced I'd use it.

going · 01/03/2011 14:41

I don't like it as it's a word not a name.

Bucharest · 01/03/2011 14:42

It was quite common as a girls' name in the late 19th century.

I have several (female) ones on my family tree.

It's bloody awful isn't it?

strandednomore · 01/03/2011 14:43

I think it is odd

cumbria81 · 01/03/2011 14:46

ridiculous name

Tommy · 01/03/2011 14:48

if you casll your child "Bay", every time someone asks what his/name is, they will Hmm

rachel234 · 01/03/2011 15:19

Is Bay really that different from Bill, Will or Ray for example?

I quite like it and know a lovely Bay (short for Bayard).

NurseSunshine · 01/03/2011 18:06

Sounds like a girl's name to me, for some reason. I don;t mind it for a girl but not keen for a boy

worldgonemad72 · 02/03/2011 20:48

i love it but then i am biased

Onion1968 · 02/03/2011 22:02

hate it, sorry

birdofthenorth · 02/03/2011 22:20

Like it. Less effiminate than Bayley. Love it, in fact. Slight possibility of bay leaf/ bay tree teasing but there's worse material you could give an offspring!

mamawhoboreme · 02/03/2011 22:31

I know a baby Bay (boy). I'm not massive on one-syllable names so would be tempted to name Bailey and shorten. But that's just me! It's not too unusual whilst still being unusual.

PrincessWellington · 02/03/2011 23:21

Umm, EBAY?

strandednomore · 03/03/2011 13:24

Bayley is a girls name.

5DollarShake · 03/03/2011 13:32

I like it for a girl - I imagine a tally, willowy brunette.

Don't like it for a boy and for the love of God, don't call him Bailey. Grin

Leenypies · 03/03/2011 16:26

Chavvy.

Sorry, but my recent experience as a teacher has taught me to steer clear of this kind of name...

CPtart · 03/03/2011 16:41

Isn't that the noise a horse makes? or is that a donkey??

Onion1968 · 03/03/2011 22:51

I'm pretty sure it's the donkey noise, no that could be bray. Yep donkey's bray, horses neigh and there is a type of horse called a Bay.

CPtart · 04/03/2011 11:42

That's what I was thinking. There's a pub near us called "The bay horse." Silly name.
